Good college names

There is a thread for bad college names, now what are some good college names :).

Princeton University

^^ I just gave one example xD

Georgetown
Vanderbilt
Cornell
Stanford
Carleton

…all very dignified-sounding.

I don’t like the names: Georgetown, Princeton or Vanderbilt, they sound prissy or overly elite.

Oberlin: Reminds me of a midsummer night.

It’s generic, but I like University of [Insert Place Name]. For instance, every American knows that the University of Oklahoma is a college in Oklahoma.

I like how Duquesne sounds nothing like how it’s spelled. And it just looks nice on paper. :stuck_out_tongue:

But not everyone knows where every place is.

University of California - Merced
University of Hawaii - Manoa
University of Minnesota - Rochester
University of the Pacific
University of Redlands
University of Rochester
The University of the South
University of Tennessee - Martin
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin
University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point

I was interviewing for a faculty position at Salisbury State University several years ago, and the interviewer grumbled that he kept having to correct colleagues who misheard the name as ‘Salisbury Steak’ U.

The campus has since been renamed simply “Salisbury University.”

Vassar
Hamilton
Middlebury
Swarthmore
… These sound sophisticated and charming

Santa [anything]

This is an interesting discussion. I’ve always felt bad for UPenn, Brown, and Columbia. People always confuse UPenn with Penn St., People don’t know what Brown is, and they think Columbia is in a foreign country. Cornell is a great name for a school. Williams is a tough name for a school because no one knows you’re talking about a school. Haverford, Swarthmore, Amherst, and Middlebury all sound very highbrow. Bowdoin would be a good name except no one knows how to pronounce it.

Princeton University"

Wait, you mean “The College of New Jersey” don’t you?

I feel like the most highbrow sounding college names are usually very anglo-saxon and two-syllables long. Duke and Princeton sound exalted, but a little too much like they’re trying too hard.
