Good EC, not so good GPA...

Hi!
I'm a junior now and I really want to go to Northwestern.
My school is ranked as the top public high school in the state, which means very competitive and hard to get good GPA. About 40 people get accepted to Northwestern from my school each year.
My grade went down tremendously in 2nd semester of my sophomore year.. and even though I get good grades this year, it's not going to be that good..

But I have really good ECs.(I think...)
-I went to Nationals for this unpopular sports that I do outside of school. I also have couple awards I got from local meets(9,10,11)
- I am a president for a club and a founder/president of another one(11)
- recognized nationally for a language test
- local newspaper student reporter/editor(10,11)
- I was selected in district and state orchestra(10,11)
- I was selected as one of the 15 girls( out of 500 girls in my grade) to be in a leadership academy(10)

I only took on SAT so far, but the numbers weren't that good.
But, I'm pretty sure that I can raise it up to 2100 or so...
I'm taking and will be taking a very rigorous classes..

Are my ECs good?
or should I just stop thinking about Northwestern since my GPA isn't so good?

Very informative discussion on whether ECs are strong or not. But, at the end of the day, most colleges overwhelmingly make raw data the primary factors in college admissions.

That being said, GPA is a VERY relative quantitative measurement. Just because your GPA may not be very high does not mean you will not get in. At some schools, people with 3.8 (UW) end up valedictorian and some have multiple people tied to BE valedictorian because of grade inflation. If you go to a great school and you’re in the top 5% or even 10%, your application will probably be very competitive.

And of course, if your school DOES have 40/year accepted (which is an extraordinary number of acceptances for one school), class rank is likely a larger factor.

GPA is hard to judge. One schools GPA is not equal to another. If your school is really that competitive and NU knows it I. Sure class rank will be a major factor. But do not give up hope. You never know what can happen, keep trying.

Knowing your GPA/class rank would be helpful in response to your post… we can’t really tell you much without any specific information.
