Plan:
- Join the U.S. Navy when I turn 18 (duration 4 years).
- Try to take some college classes in the military and some personal study to prepare myself for college.
- Move to Arizona.
- Go to community college in Arizona and get my A.S. Degree there (duration 2 years).
- Transfer to Arizona State University and get my B.A. Degree in Civil Engineering (duration 2.5 years).
- Get a position as a Civil Engineer and launch my career.
Here are my questions:
- Do you people think it is a good and sound plan for my career choice?
- Are there any flaws or errors or recommendations you guys have about my plan?
Thank you guys and please tell me what you think about my plan. Thank you very much!
Doesn’t seem like a bad plan. Things may happen unexpectedly (aka maybe no moving to Arizona right away) but hey that’s life. Could you possibly explain why you want to go into the military and hold off college for now?
The biggest flaw is that it is awfully rigid, you have to leave room to take advantage of opportunities that come up along the way and be flexible enough to change plans as you learn more about your options. Also you only have one bum year. If you take some prereqs first, you can probably get directly into an engineering program as a more mature person. It isn’t necessary to get an AS to transfer into a 4 year program, sometimes doing that is not optimal because you take classes not necessary for the 4 year goal.
The Didactic: Thanks! By joining the military, I get up to 10 years of free college: the military pays for it-books and classes. I also want the adventure and discipline I feel I will get from it and the travel the Navy offers is great. My parents cannot or won’t pay for my college and I don’t want to rely on them anymore (as they are somewhat stubborn and disagreeable).
BrownParent: The reason for the somewhat “strict” life schedule is that I don’t want to waste any time. I want to get my degree and ship out to the Civil Engineering field. What do you think I should maybe edit it? A year of rest time: what do you recommend?
Why Arizona in particular? There are 50 states to choose from, so more than one of them may be suitable for you. Of course, you may change your mind as you near the end of your military service.
ucbalumnus: I chose Arizona as I currently live in California. I love how Arizona has good weather (all four seasons) and has a pretty good economy and house prices. I also want to attend (as I said) Mesa Community College which is located in Arizona and then relocate near Arizona State University. I feel that Arizona will be my permanent residence and I feel that it that state is one of the best ones in the U.S.
