i am looking for an essay topic to blow admissions officers away with some originality. i am guessing they read a lot of essays that sound very similar.

i was thinking about writing about the time i went sailing when the remnants of hurricane katrina hit my area. winds were incredible and it put my ten year sailing experience to the test.

does that sound like a good basis? or do they need to see how some event changed your life or your personality?

I'm having the same problem with essays... to me that sounds like a great essay topic. I'm guessing colleges just want to see a bit of your personality besides your stats... they want to get a glimpse of your personality through your writing style, etc. I don't think the topic is as important as how you express yourself. But I could be wrong.

I agree completely; I think that colleges focus more on your personal style and diction that come through your writing, rather than a topic that "reveals everything about you."
