Good idea? Chances of getting into MBA program?

So right now I'm an Economics major at Rutgers University who will be graduating next year. After doing research I've decided that an Accounting career path may be more satisfying than the financial route I was planning on taking. I am actually looking for some accounting internships, but my 3.0 GPA and Economics degree is making it a little difficult.

Anyway, Rutgers has an MBA in Professional Accounting that would give me the Accounting experience I need and an MBA. I was wondering if this is a good idea? What is really worrying me is that since I will just be finishing my undergrad with hopefully a year of interning will I even stand a chance getting into their Master's program? My GPA is 3.0, hopefully will finish a bit higher. I know Rutgers isn't the most prestigeous, but money is a little problem. Also, PWC and E&Y do quite a bit of recruiting here so that is a plus. Any input is welcome!

The first and most important thing to look at is the quality of the education and focus of the program. For instance, had you still been interested in finance, Columbia GSB might have been a good school since it is a feeder school in that industry. Keep in mind that the school you attend will be a badge on your resume. The higher the ranking of the school, the more prestigious your resume; not to mention, you will be making great contacts! I would check out http://www.veritasprep.com/business-school/ for facts about the top 30 programs or, good old business week, http://www.businessweek.com/schools for more info.

I honestly don't even know what I want to do anymore. This sucks. I spent all day reading forums, reading everything about every single career. Engineering to Nursing. I graduate next year on the 5 year plan and I have no idea what I'm going to do. I feel like my resume sucks so I won't be getting any good job. I'm pretty introverted, so making contacts is scaring me when it comes to the business world. I feel I won't be able to network and that's what is really scaring me about Finance. I just want to make six figures and be happy, but this is real difficult. I could just scream right now.

Thanks for your input though, I'm just so confused right now.

Just curious. I'm in a similar situation about not knowing what career path to take.

I don't know if it's for the wrong reasons, but there's a lot of things about being an accountant that I actually like. I like the job security, the salary, and the not so extreme excessive hours. The idea that if I get into a big 4 firm, take the CPA test and pass I'll be able to get into a really good MBA program (no longer thinking about this Rutgers program). After that I feel like my possibilities and potential will be endless, and I'll be extremely marketable. The only thing about Accounting I'm worried about is that I'll find it boring once I get into it. There are a couple things that seem very interesting though like Forensic Accounting, and like everyone on these boards will tell you, you can do a lot as a CPA.

A CPA, while a nice certification, is far from a guarantee into a top MBA program. Leadership, work progression, and professional experience is far more important.

Yes, but getting the CPA will help you get that professional experience, etc. I'm not saying its a guarantee, but it's a step in the right direction.

Yes it is -- but not more so than any other kind of certification. In other words, it definitely doesn't hurt your candidacy -- but you don't get brownie points for it either.

I just happened to stumble upon this conversation and thought I would also ask for any input from anyone since these posts have been made. I’m currently in a very similar situation. Rutgers Economics degree, 3.3 gpa, no experience, currently applied to Rutgers Professional Accounting masters program. Just wanted to know if anyone has any further insight or if the creator of the thread was accepted into the program themselves. Thanks for the help.
