Good merit scholarship/full ride options for a qualified student

Robertson at Duke and UNC. Other full rides at UNC. Stamps scholarship in Stamps network. Signature scholarships for Vandy, Wash U and ND.

It is harder to get full rides from those selective colleges than admission to ivy leagues. Since you might be qualified for FA, I advise that you apply tiered safety, match and reach. Who knows you C might be going to a top school with COA of a state college. Best of luck!

Arizona State (Barrett Honors). Formerly there was auto merit for National Merit. No longer, but I know of National Merit scholars that have gotten full rides or close to it in recent years.

Full tuition scholarships (not full ride) are available at Vanderbilt, Wash U, Case Western, and U of Richmond through separate competitive application. Lehigh also has decent merit for high stats students and might appeal to your STEM oriented child. These are extremely hard to get but worth looking into if you keep your expectations realistic.

Where ARE you instate???

I am not comfortable posting that … too many details in the original post. But suggestions in this thread are very useful Thank you ALL SO MUCH. We thought merit scholarships were things of the past and then Georgia tech, Texas Universities and Oklahoma started sending info and emails and that made me curious to find out more. I found out about Duke merit and Stamps so we will start researching more.

@cognizance some of the scholarships you’ve mentioned are ‘competitive’ and some are ‘automatic’ I highly suggest picking at least one school that offers an ‘automatic’ NM scholarship that meets your financial needs and your kid would be willing to attend and have them apply as early as possible. Those competitive scholarships are VERY competitive and a lot of work, it will significantly reduce the stress level once there is one affordable acceptance in hand.

@3scoutsmom Thank you. We understand that and will do the same. It is good to have at least some choices in this tough world of colleges. We get so much mailings but some of the mails have proved very useful and heartening. I get that things like Jefferson or Stamps will be long shot but that’s OK. I am not sure about JHU or Northwestern or UNC though as I did not find something very specific about merit on their web site.

@cognizance To the best of my knowledge, Northwestern offers need-based aid and the NM award is about 2K. JHU awards very little merit money.

@Midwest67 My daughter will be applying for the Patterson scholarship at UK. Do you mind if I ask your kid’s stats when applying? I’m super sad to hear that it used to be full ride, but not anymore.

@alliblues

IMO, anywhere one can get good opportunities and a full tuition waiver is a fantastic deal.

Sure, we were lucky that UK was doing full tuition plus four years of room and board stipend (on or off campus) for my D’s incoming class.

Last year, it was full tuition plus first two years of room and board stipend (applicable to on-campus housing only).

The Patterson is automatic for NMFs and NHS (National Hispanic Scholars) — traditional “stats” don’t apply to this scholarship. The Singletary is competitive.

Last year, UK didn’t update the scholarship info until sometime in September, and I believe there is an early deadline for Honors? Or the Patterson? I don’t remember now.

Schools don’t offer the big carrots forever. The ACT requirement creeps up, and/or the award goes down, or it gets more restrictive. That’s just how it is.

As others have stated, it’s important to keep an eye on the schools that will potentially offer the big bucks and have those applications ready to fire off when the info is updated at the web sites.

@cognizance , UCF is a great place as well since, as @vistajay noted, Florida has extended Benaquisto to OSS. For Florida schools that means full cost of attendance. It has really changed our life plan. Knowing that after paying tuition for our oldest daughter for 1 more year we won’t have any college bills for our youngest lets us think about retirement ! My daughter fell in love with the campus and she is excited about spending 4 years in Orlando, 45 minutes from the beach. Florida is really thinking ahead by providing great opportunities for kids to study. when people ask my daughter if she’s coming back to Texas after graduation she just smiles and says ,“We’ll see”. I think Florida is making a smart investment in their future. As far as Texas goes there are some schools making great offers as well. Texas Texas Tech offers full cost of attendance as does UT Tyler, UT Arlington, and i think University of North Texas. UTD comes close to COA as well. As soon as the NMSF list goes out you will be inundated so start the process early.

GT does not give scholarships for NMF’s. Its on their website.
