good neuroscience programs

Hello
I'm finishing an IB in France and want to go to a school in the North East, with an international student body, where there is a good neuroscience or neurobiology program with excellent research opportunities. I also plan to double major or minor in music - so a good music department as well. I am looking at Amherst, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Barnard. Visits to Vassar and Georgetown were also great but are they strong on neuroscience? Barnard is interesting with the courses available at Columbia. I was not able to visit Oberlin or Cornell but am curious about them as well.

I want to work hard but don't want a super competitive atmosphere.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Most of the type of colleges you mention will have about 10% international students. I don’t know where you would find a college/unit with an international student body in the US.

I didn’t know LAC even offered Neuro (or Cornell as undergrad though I may be mistaken), it isn’t a common undergrad major here, although I guess you have found enough that have it. But those are all very good colleges though you might compare the range of courses offered with a research university for guideline. It may not matter to have more than you can take anyway for your undergraduate degree especially, as you’d have to have a grad degree to do anything with it. You may take a look at Brown which is a research uni, but with a small grad and med school and a lot of undergraduate research available. My daughter attended and has remarked upon the collaborative and cooperative nature many times. I’m not familiar with the music programs but they are known to be strong across the board and has quite an artsy component of students. Of course harder to get into. Wellesley also has neuro and you can take classes at MIT although it requires taking a shuttle that may be up to 30 minutes. Vanderbilt, Duke and JHU have strong neuro but the latter two may be quite competitive.

University of Rochester has:

 • strong neuroscience program w research
 • Eastman School of Music (#1 or #3 ranked music school depending on who’s list)
 • has an int’l student body
 • in northeast

Colgate U has a great neuroscience program. Not a lot of int’l students though…

AnnieBeats,

What do you mean by “alot”? I see on colgate.edu’s Class of 2018 profile that 10% of the incoming class is “international” and, for what it’s worth, 30% are “multicultural”. This is in line with the past few years.

Good luck with your college search, mic33m! You can read about the neuroscience program at colgate.edu too.

A second suggestion to consider U Rochester based upon your stated interests.

Having your stats would really help, OP, including whether or not you’re full pay. Having just done such a search for D, I know there are many good neurosci programs out there, and some have intl student bodies.
