Good or Bad Deferral letter

Received my deferral letter today...was a bit devastated, but it is what it is and just hoping that I get in. Although I have been hearing word about "good and bad" deferral letters and just wondering what is the difference? I know one would sound more positive, but is there really a correlation between the number of deferred students accepted and the type of letter? Here's mine:

Dear _____
Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2014. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2014.

Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

I got the same one but for Engineering. Uhhh…I can’t really improve my grades any further since they’re maxed out…

That’s the good one.

Yep i received the same letter and people have been saying this is the “good” one. As you can see in the letter we got it never says an exact decision date for us, however in one of the “bad” letters its says your application will not be reviewed until the regular decision date and requires that 7th semester grades are sent. There are stories that people with the “good” letter have received letter within a few days admitting them after they got the initial deferral. So keep your head up because this letter seems to be a good sign!

There is no good or bad deferral letter. Read through last years thread. You were no more likely to eventually be accepted or wait listed with any of the letters.

@sundaypunch I’m sure it has some indication… The two emails have a completely different tone.

Nope - none. Discussed ad nauseam every year.

^^^

Correct. Look at past years threads and you will see that the letters don’t matter. There were many people eventually accepted that got the “bad” letter (the one that requires you to send grades). Some of these people were accepted rather quickly in RD once they sent their grades.

Don’t take my word for it - do the research and find out for yourself.

There is no difference in the meaning of the two letters. Neither are an indication of your odds of being accepted or rejected.
