Good Pre-Med Program

I already applied to UMTC and i'm still waiting for an admission letter, but i was wondering how good the pre-med program is at Minnesota? I was also wondering what is a student's acceptance rate into a medical school is from Minnesota? I wasn't considering it too much, but since i got postponed at Madison, I tied between St. Louis university and Minnesota and i was just wondering which school people would recommended for Pre-med and eventually med school

Pre med programs aren’t really important (unless you get into like the ricebaylor program or something really selective). All med schools look at are GPA and MCAT scores. My brother is going through the process right now and undergrad doesnt really matter minus those two scores and some ECS.

Agree with omg that UG college is not important except for a very few colleges (perhaps 10 total). The Rice-Baylor program is different though as it’s a BS/MD combined program. There is no difference between the three schools you’ve mentioned.

If you want to find out more about UG colleges and premed, go to the PreMed Topics subforum, there are many very informed posters there (current Med school students, and parents and students who are going through the process now). Also, the acceptance rate to Med school is a poor indicator of a good premed college as they all calculate their numbers differently, see the PreMed forum for that information as well.

The other posts are correct. All that matters is your gpa, mcat, and extra curriculars. However, in the long run, it would be easier to get a higher gpa and letter of recommendations from a smaller private college. At the U of M, the professors are not always the best at teaching. I am comparing it to a local community college by the way. Good luck!

^^I would be careful about taking premed requirements (except perhaps English & math) at a CC.

I agree with entomom. Medical schools look down at science, chemistry, and math courses being taken at community colleges.

My daughter is looking at premed too, but I’m not sure I agree that the school doesn’t matter. Isn’t it the same as going to a good high school vs. a bad high school. I would imagine some Universities better prepare you for the MCAT’s than others. Sort of like ACT… Some schools have overall higher ACT scores than others. I would imagine MCAT’s might be the same…

That is true to a point. Some universities have a higher percentage of premeds who gain acceptance into medical schools versus others, but they have a way of cheating. Some colleges have what they call a premed committee that determines if the student is “worthy” enough to be given the ok by them. If the committee decides to not give the student a recommendation, he/she will have more of a difficult time getting in. As you can see, they just “weed out” the people who they think cannot handle applying, which ends up distorting their medical school acceptance rate.

The best place to find PreMed information on CC is the PreMed Topics subforum. There are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful current Med school students, parents and students applying this round, etc.

You should also check out studentdoctornetwork.net and go to their pre medical forum. That is where I got the majority of my information from.

^^^SDN also has great information, but it is also much more daunting a place ;).
