Good Prep Schools

Ok so I will be applying for Groton, Hotchkiss, and Andover. I know these are very competitive schools. What are some schools that still are very good but are kinda like "safety schools"? Also I posted my stats so if you could take a look at those and chance me that would be great.

I’ll advocate for Hill I wouldn’t call it a “safety school”, but it does have a relatively high acceptance rate compared to the other schools you’re applying to. Plus it’s going in a really good direction and is sometimes referred to as “the family boarding school”.

Prep schools vary a lot. There are many fine schools. The different interests, curriculums, single or co-ed, east or west, sports and extracurriculars are something that it is worth thinking over as you begin your search. Boardingschoolreview.com, and these boards are a good place to poke around. Once you have an idea what “good” means to you, you will have a better chance of finding it.

If you give us more information about your interests, we can make more specific suggestions.

Maybe check out the hidden gem thread.

Probably one of the ways of looking at it is the acceptance rate.

The school you mentioned have the lowest accept rate (i…e. harder to get in).
They are all under 15%. The schools mentioned here most all have similar rate. (15~20%)

It doesn’t, however, necessarily mean that the schools over 20% are easy to get in.
The top school may think you are a great fit and a ‘safer’ school may not. What’s more important than the number is overall fit between you and the school.

I assume that any school with up to 30%~35% accept rate is not an automatic safety at all.

Are you looking for day schools, or just boarding?

Boarding, please. You can see my interests on my other post.

sg: it’s better form on CC to do what research you can on these boards, search for posts that match your interests, then ask specific questions you can’t find answers to. As jackpa pointed out, the hidden gems thread might be a starting point.

Sorry, I only applied to day schools. Good luck with your applications!

The hidden gems thread is pretty awesome. They have descriptions for each school and all that jazz. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not necessarily ‘easy’ to get into, though. It’s just most of them have higher acceptance rates than the incredibly selective schools you mentioned.

Try Episcopal High School. They are a really good school ten minutes away from Washington D.C. ( and if youre interested in this kind of thing, they have pretty good Ivies/Stanford/MIT matriculation, about 20%) But that doesn’t mean they’re easy to get into. They accept roughly 30% of applicants. (On my friends acceptance letter last year it said thay accepted 125 students out of about 600 applicants.)
