In the past, I've tried to avoid having to buy new cartridges by refilling with ink, but results were never good. I don't do that anymore but the printer I have now is also failing me (bad text quality, page streaking..)... I'm thinking about trying laser printers instead of the inkjet ones I've always been using.

Have any of you been able to keep up a steady "use-and-refill" procedure with your printers?

I bought a Brother laser printer for 50 bucks after mail in rebate from office max. It should be able to print over a thousand pages on its first toner

A replacement toner is like 50 bucks and it should print another 2000 pages, granted its only black and white.

If you'd like, I have a Lexmark E238 monochrome laser printer I'm thinking of selling. PM me if you're interested.

Back to the OT, well, I'd get a laser just because its cheaper than inkjet over time (especially with the cost of ink cartridges), and you get some really sharp text with lasers.

i'd say most people have printers. you COULD arrange to share one with your roommate(s), but i preferred not to. there are also ways to leech off the free printing around campus, or just pay for printing when you run out of free copies, but that's also more of a hassle.
in my triple, we all have printers. honestly i don't know anyone who doesn't have one xD

I HIGHLY recommend getting a cheap laser printer. But that's my opinion, and you definitely don't have to listen to it. I just have had less-than-good experiences with most inkjet printers...

thanks for all the advice... I'll probably get a laser printer over summer. And yea, most of my friends in halls have printers, so there's enough room.

One thing that might make the roommates more interested in having a whirring machine of printitude in the room is to hook it up to a router and make it a network printer. Then you just get everyone to pitch in on toner or paper or something, and everyone benefits.

Of course, economics tells us that public goods tend to be poorly maintained, but that's something for you and your roommate(s) to deal with. ;)

I did think of doing that, but advice from upperclassmen deterred me. It can just get too complicated with deciding who printed more out when, etc, etc..
