good samaratin policy...

I know that this board has an exhaustive discussion about the drinking culture at Kenyon and I largely agree about what has been said. Having said that, upon reading the recent issue of the Collegian it seems the drinking culture at Kenyon is much larger and more prevalent than I ever realized. They quote in the story "Kenyon isn't dry like some schools; with this choice, it chooses to allow, perhaps attract, students who are interested in drinking...Like it or not, alcohol consumption is a way of life at Kenyon."

I am not a drinker and I have no problem whatsoever with those who do, its just that I don't want to arrive Kenyon this summer and feel suffocated by the drinking at Kenyon.

For those of you at Kenyon, are my concerns justified?

I had very similar concerns before I came to Kenyon, but what I have found is that while it is relatively unusual not to drink, it is perfectly acceptable. I personally don't spend a lot of time at parties, but there are quite a few people who go out a lot but don't drink. There are also lots of other activities on campus to avoid drinking, but the main social culture definitely revolves around the party scene. However, there are several groups on campus that are working to change this trend. I would recommend asking to live on the Wellness hall if you are interested in finding people who do not drink.

Hey dal! I dont drink much. :p

I do not drink at all and yet I have had no problems. I am pledging this semester and am around a lot of alcohol at most times but not once have I been forced into drinking. People respect your choices here and while they might offer you a drink, they will appreciate your decision if you choose not to drink.
Bottomline: drinking exists at Kenyon but is not a problem as such for the non-drinker like you and I!
