Alright so I have a 3.3 UW and a 3.65 W GPA which I know is really bad in comparison to my SAT score. My Junior year was 3.8 Weighted but my Sophomore year was just all bad due to Chemistry and Algebra II H.

AP's
European History AP = 3

Spanish IV AP = ? (taking this year)
Calc AB AP = ? (taking this year)

As you can see I have certain high points in my application and certain not so good things. But as an overall package what kind of schools should I be applying to? I live in California so I was definitely looking at UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, and Cal Poly. What do you think my chances are for each of those, and to what other school do you recommend me applying to?

help please?

My
Post

I’m in the same situation. Right down to the SAT and gpa. I’m applying to the UC system and some selective privates.

I actually think you’ll get in to all the places you mentioned.

:)

I think SB and SD may be reaches.

Man I’ll never understand how people can get fantastic SAT scores but have low GPA’s. I’m the complete opposite. My GPA is a 3.92 UW but due to my lack of proper time management and panic issues my SAT score is an 1820.

Well it’s just sophomore year.

Freshman year I had a 3.6 UW, 4.0 W
Sophomore year 2.8 UW 3.4 W
Junior Year 3.5 UW 3.8 W
Senior Year 3.8 UW 4.4 W

See I had this Algebra II Honors class which is known to be the hardest class at our school since the teacher used to be a proffesor at Stanford. And it was a really interesting class so I made it the top priority. But she gave us so much work that many night all I could finish was just the math homework, so my grades in my other classes suffered substantially. I’m not a dumb person, just had some bad luck that the GPA they use is Sophomore and Junior year which are my worst 2.

any suggestions for schools to apply to?

Mcgill in Canada or U of Toronto. Canadian schools mostly look at test scores and they’re some of the best in the world

How would I fair at UBC, cause that would be so rad to drive up to Whistler to go skiing every weekend. Just a little too much of an asian population for my taste. I’m chill with them, it’s just a bit overwhelming when you can count the number of white guys you see in a day on 2 hands.

I feel like you have a pretty darn good shot at UBC. It all depends on what department you apply to though. Some are more competitive than others. Try to apply to a department where your grades are strong. Unlike American schools, Canadians schools do not care as much about the “multi dimensional nature” of a student (well roundedness.) They care mostly about how talented you are in the subject you are applying. Do you have any idea what your class rank is? My brother is attending McGill in Montreal (also close to great skiing) with a 2190 SAT and he was ranked around 100/600. Oh and he loves it there.

Also I hate to be obnoxious advertising my own thread but any chances would be greatly appreciated: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/801251-chance-anglo-saxon-hero-ivies-tier-1-schools.html</a></p>

lololol? you think you can drive up to whistler to go skiing every weekend?!!!

Dream on, buddy…

it’s not open half the year

it’s gonna cost you a fortune

takes like 2 hours to drive to whistler from UBC, 4 hours there and back

You think you can juggle coursework and all that? Canadian schools may be easier to get in, but the coursework is definitely not easier by one bit.

There’s more white people in UBC than you give credit for, too.

I got an apartment up there that my family owns right next to the Cinema/Starbucks in Whistler Village that I could use whenever I want. Only thing I’d be spending money on is the season pass and ski gear up-keep. Going to the Winter Olympics there in February gonna be rad. And I don’t mind the drive seeing as I used to do a 4 hour drive up to Tahoe every weekend for 2 years for Ski Team.

UBC, yes. I see you like skiing, so perhaps the University of Vermont? I am no expert, but…^^

Chance me also? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/802020-texas-has-bison-but-vermont-has-ski-slopes-where-shall-i-end-up.html</a></p>

What’s the procedure and due dates for application for the Canadian School System?

you have good chances for all of those schools, maybe even apply to UCLA, those SAT scores and SATIIs are so good that a 3.5 does not look that bad

chance me back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/801012-chance-me-i-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

SB = reach
Others = decent match

Chance back
Good luck!
