I am a Canadian applicant, and as such, I'm not completely familiarized with the American admissions process.

Correct me if I'm wrong: Your SAT score and GPA are two measures that determine if your application will proceed to further evaluation.

If this is true, I don't understand why people on CC constantly say, "You have to have 2300+ to be a competitive applicant at an Ivy League school.." Don't they realize that the median score for top tier schools, such as Harvard, is usually in the low to mid 2200's? That means half of the admitted applicants got lower than that...

My question: What is a competitive SAT score that will get you into the applicant pool for top tier schools?

If I had to guess I’d say 2250 for 8-15th ranks. 2300 for top 7 schools.

@potatoskillet, so you’re saying that if you get below 2250, these schools won’t even glance at your application? I smell bs…

I’m almost 100% sure that the average SAT score for Harvard is around 2250, the median probably less. You do know that people who get under 2250 are therefore admitted into Harvard, right?

Top tier as in what? Ivies? I assume you’re asking this question because you want to know what score you should aim for/be content with… in reality, anything above 2100 is an amazing score and will get you into a great university, but a 2200 or 2300 is for the cream of the crop, HYP stuff. Obviously, a 2200 + amazing credentials will get you looks, but your window is wider when you have a score in the 2300’s. It’s all relative.

Well, actually no. I’m applying ED to Johns Hopkins, and I am an international applicant.
