Low SAT = Goodbye to top schools?

Would a low SAT score, say 2100-2200 be considered an automatic reject for those students considering top schools like HYP? Could amazing ecs and good essays be able to balance out the score? Thanks.

alright, ive seen it about a million times... what does HYP stand for?

-fff

HYP = Harvard, Princeton, Yale

2200 isn't necessarily low, just slightly below average for those schools. Amazing EC's and Amazing essays (not just good ones :) ) would be able to balance them out. However, you have to recognize that there will be people with 2300+ and amazing EC's and amazing essays, so you have to have something that makes you stand out in that applicant pool if you don't have the stats (national recognition in some field).

alright, im going to say this to you and believe it really believe it. I am a proud 2050! and I got into Stanford, Columbia, Brown, and a a few others. You have to realize one thing and I wish someone would have said it to me. BE YOURSELF in the application. CC is a great place to get tid bit of info, but its very destructive when it come to defining yourself an applicant. dont use it unless you have to. dont look at stats. you are your own candidate. if you anything like me, you are a horrible SAT test taker because you dont believe in it and you think its just a money ploy. So screw the SAT, get good grades, be passionate about what you do, remeber, you are your own. Dont pick school based on prestige, pick them because you are inlove with them. They will fall in love with you, princeton, harvard, any one else.... good luck

Yeah i got a 2210, dont know if you consider that low, but I still got into the ivy leagues, and I am still going. Btw, I still considered a top applicant in the ivy leagues as Cornell gave me the Presidential Scholar, which goes to only 2% of the undergraduate class, so I guess you could say I was considered the top of the ivy applicant pool. I hope this helps, remember SAT isnt everything, and it is only April, and you are still considering applying, just study retake the test and get a higher score if it makes you feel better. :D

2100-2200 isn't that low for HYP at all, as a matter of fact, (let me use Yale as an example), 2100, assuming the worst, would be just above the bottom 25% mark. Obviously, 1 in 4 people admitted to Yale this year had SATs less than 2100 (assuming an equal distribution between math, CR, and writing).

Let's look at the SATs at Yale this year to prove my point.

Middle 50%:

Verbal:

700-790

Math:

700-790

Average would be about 1490/1600, and about mid 2200s with all three sections assuming even distribution. 2100-2200 is on the low end, but is far, far from anything as rash as an auto-reject.

Now, let's assume 2100-2200 was a low score. ECs and essays that were great would have to be touched by God, simply because there are dozens of applicants that could take a person's place that have amazing ECs and essays as well--the only difference is higher SATs.

:( I feel your pain. I'm a 2140. I'll be retaking it though and I'm trying to take in all the 'SAT scores aren't EVERYTHING posts' but I'm nervous. We can quake together. ;_;

I don't think this post makes sense but I have an AP tomorrow and I can't sleep. SUCKS.

I think all of you have become my new best friends.

You kids these days are crazy. You're going to be fine with those scores.

Nash

Those SAT scorse are way to low. YOU ALL are going to get REJECTED!!!!

Just for perspective's sake, the 'mean' score for this year is around 1610- or slightly over a 500 on each section. So, if you're feeling down, just think: Your score is over 500pts above average!

screw u guys 2100-2200 is not low and i will slap u if u say it is. =[

you guys are ridiculous --2100+ really isn't that "low" I don't know what you're talking about! Geez. There's more to the application than numbers you know. Plenty of kids who get 2300's on their SATs were rejected while other kids with more subtance and passion who had slightly lower SATs got into the schools of their choice. I have a friend who got into Stanford with a 3.4 GPA and the SATs weren't amazing, I don't event think there were past 2000, so calm down. Do your best and stop freaking out because it's a waste of time, just do what you need to do and you will be fine. :)

WOW you guys are pathetic. look at the percentage. i am assuming u got like 700+ on all three sections. That means your better than like 95ish% of all test takers. 95%!!!!! So quit worring about SAT scores and shine in academics and ECs. I can make up for my scores with a outstanding Track and Field record, VP of National Honor Society, some awards, and a 3.94 UW GPA. So dont worry about SAT scores. That is just one part of an application
process.

Am I the only one who scored a 1320 (not adding my writing) here?

i got a 1290!!! whoot whoot, im onoly 88th percentile... oh well

Haha, 'only' 88th percentile. We've got serious standards on this board. I love it, though.

whoa 1290 is 88th percentile?
i'm a little smarter than i thought :-D

Well, as for SATs, beyond a certain reasonable point, it becomes a nonfactor (everyone's got great scores), so work on your other stuff.

Hey, I did fine with a 2200.

Well, you have a very good chance. SAT scores aren't EVERYTHING! I made a 2250 on the dang thing and I got into those "big-name" schools. To be honest, with what's going with the SAT's this year, I think that it won't even matter later on in life, so let's quit stressing about it for now.

Even with my "high" or "low" scores, I denied the University of Chicago, Yale, and ... what's the other school, thinks BOSTON! Phew... I couldn't remember, anyway, and decided to attend an in-state public university. The lifestyle at those big name schools aren't for me...Prestige is one thing, but when you really look at it, for me, it's not worth it. Even though the thought of attending them is very entertaining, I like the people at public universities. My friend who got accepted into Harvard, decided to go to a four year public university in town, and it's not even considered one of the "top" schools in the nation. But, you know what, we're all different. If that's where you want to go, then shoot for the stars! You're SAT scores are more than good, they're great!
