so...ive played piano for 10 years, love it and really do want to continue in college. (my ultimate goal, however, is not to be a "classical pianist" in the performance sense of the phrase...i want to play/music direct for theatre, hopefully on broadway.)

that said, i also love journalism, and while there are many great music schools with equally strong journalism programs (northwestern, ithaca to a lesser extent) they often dont allow doubling between two separate, specialized schools. (career goal here would be to be a theatre/music critic, but thats only if the playing on b-way thing doesnt work out!)

i would also love a great MT program...but thats asking a whole lot.

My D is going to NYU Steinhardt in violin performance and is thinking of doing a double major in journalism in NYU CAS. Her advisor indicated that this would be fine to do, i.e., double major across schools. Journalism at NYU requires a double major with another department, in that its major requirements are not that extensive. So, it sounds like a good candidate for a double major with performance or musical theater. NYU Journalism also has a London program where you can take a course in theater criticism.

If you get a BA in music rather than a performance (BM) degree, there are quite a few schools that will allow you to double. Indiana U is one that jumps to mind. UGA has a world class journalism program and a decent music program, but I don't know anything about their piano dept. My D is planning to double in music and languages, and we found that most schools were willing to let her do this.

Binx's advice is excellent.Look into the BA in MUsic rather than Performance. Also my thought is that you should explore schools where there is a strong performance schedule in music, theatre, etc and that has a newspaper that would allow you to become their reviewer for theater, performance, etc. A school that has a strong journalism major may be a harder track for a non major to become the resident critic.
I've also heard a student interested in writing for the school paper should look for a place that publishes daily rather than weekly, theres more opportunities.

You could also consider doing an undergraduate major that requires a lot of writing (e.g., English) and then an MA program in journalism. Many top schools (e.g. Harvard, Columbia, UC Berkeley) do not offer journalism as a major, but their graduates go on to do well in the journalism world. You might also consider a double degree at Oberlin in English and Piano -- they have an excellent English department and a newspaper.

At Indiana University, you can pursue a degree called BSOF which is 'Bachelor of Science with an Outside Field'. You get your BS in your instrument with a large concentration in your choice of an outside field. The music curriculum for students pursuing the BSOF is basically the same as the BM kids with only a few very small differences. I have friends using their outside field to fulfil pre-med requirements, create an ad hoc MT training with the theater school, do creative writing or poly sci for pre-law, etc.

This isn't a double major, but it's a way for music kids to get a more well-rounded education. In most cases, a fifth year in this program would allow you enough credits to declare a double major.
