Good Schools for Matches - Chance Me (I'll return the favor)

I graduate HS in 2012, so obviously I still have awhile to go before I even apply to college. Although I have already taken the ACT and the SAT, I plan on retaking both this year as well as taking SAT IIs (Math, Writing, and Biology). So, this is just general guideline if I am currently on track to get into UCLA, USC, and Georgetown. Certainly not safety schools, but relative matches.

I am currently enrolled in the IB program at a public AZ high school in a very good area.

GPA: 4.0 (unweighted) 4.8 (weighted)

ACT: 32
SAT: 2180 (scores from CR, M, and W were about equal)
As I said, retaking both this year and will actually study. Hoping to raise ACT to 33 or 34 and SAT to 2250+.

Taking all IB classes as well as AP/Honors classes as my electives. Will have four years of english, four years of a social science/history, four years of Spanish, four years of a laboratory science, and four years of math (including calculus from my Math HL class)

Extracurriculars:

Ranked 1st in the state, 2nd in the nation, and ranked internationally three years in a row (US national team) for competitive rock climbing. I train 25 hours per week even during the school year, so naturally this along with my IB curriculum eats up my time.
^^ this is my main EC and my passion...I have pages of accomplishments to show for this. Although the rest of my EC list fairly generic (volunteer work, school clubs, etc), rock climbing is my strong point.

Volunteer at Mayo Clinic Hospital

Staff writer for school newspaper

Published multiple times in school's literary magazine

Secretary of school community service club

Part of a group that wrote a grant proposal for $5000 to our school's library

Member of Spanish Honor Society

I'd appreciate your input! I haven't taken my IB exams yet, clearly, but I believe those are only optional to include on college applications.

I think you could get in almost anywhere. Your test scores are really good already and they will most likely go up, so that coupled with rock climbing makes you really unique. You’ll be a good candidate for wherever you decide to apply. Sure, there’s still a chance for rejection, but your stats are solid. In the end it will be up to you to decide where to go. Just pick a college that you like instead of a college that looks better. Just saying, my friend went to Harvard because she got in, but she hates it, she’s a sophomore now and totally regrets not going to NYU so just make the right decision.

Agreed with the poster above. Take a look at some schools you love, and if you have a first choice, I would apply ED or EA if available. You will definitely be going somewhere great.

Yeah, as the above two posters have said, you have a good chance at any school you apply to. If you’re looking at HYPS level schools try to boost that SAT near (or above) a 2300 or 34+ for ACT. I don’t know if there is a demand for highly accomplished rock-climbers at these top-tier schools, but it is a very unique talent, and your accomplishments will catch the eye of adcoms at top schools for sure. If you keep up the good work, UCLA, G-town, and USC will be within your reach for sure. If you’re a Cali resident then I think UCLA and USC would probably be safeties/low matches.
But relax, don’t worry about college just yet…just focus on acing junior year and finding your true academic passions that you may want to major in. Once your done with junior year start looking for schools that really fit you (don’t just worry about prestige and ranking). Good luck, although you probably don’t need it :)

You could probaly get into all of those schools and more with those stats. Maybe another hundred or so points on the SAT and you could probaly aim for some HYP schools ;)

Good luck :)

I second everyone else. Take the SAT or ACT (whichever or both?) and aim for 2250+ or 33+. Also, what is your class rank? A 4.0 only means something if you’re in the tippy top of your class!

Overall, looking great so far :)

Bad chancing. If this person read your post, he would know that you’re going to a good AZ high school, so “If you’re a Cali resident…” doesn’t cut it. Plus, USC doesn’t care whether or not you’re in-state.

Your application looks like it’s that of an incoming senior with a great chance when applying to a college anywhere. But you’re only an incoming junior so you have a whole year to make your app look that much better. Keepin’ this in mind, I’m sure you’ll get into any college you apply to if you continue progressing like you have been doin’.

Thank you everyone! I will certainly keep it up, and hopefully boost my test scores even higher. My class rank is 12/603 by the way.

And my top choice is Stanford! My dad went there, and he loved it, and I love it as well. If I can get my test scores up even higher and continue to succeed in school and in rock climbing I will consider applying ED or EA.
