Huge upward GPA, very high ACT, decent EC's ; help chance me!

Hey CC!

I was wondering if anyone would help me out with my "chances" for colleges. It would be very helpful if some of you guys could look at my qualifications and help me get a feel on how my chances are for getting into some of these higher level schools. Of course, I know that no reply is definite but it would help me make a more final list of schools I will apply to.

Senior at suburban public high school in Ohio. I'm very ambitious, intelligent, and idealistic when it comes to my future. Freshman year was just a bad time for me but I took it upon myself to get focused and improve.

Some stats:
GPA - 3.9 (Freshman 2.8; Sophomore 4.3; Junior 4.9; Senior N/A)
ACT - 34 (E 33 M 33 R 35 S 35 // W 12)

AP
US History - 4
English Lang - 5
US Gov - 4
Biology - 4

** Courses **
Freshman - English I, Physical Science, Spanish II, Modern World History
Sophomore - Biology, AP US History, Hon Algebra II, Hon English II, Spanish III
Junior - AP English Language, AP Biology, AP US Gov, IB Psychology, IB Chemistry HL Year 1, Hon Precalc
Senior - AP Physics C, AP English Literature, AP Calc AB, AP World History, IB Chem HL Yr 2, IB Business SL

SAT Subject Tests - will take soon

EC

- Social Studies Club (President)
- Student Senate
- Key Club
- National Honors Society
- Library Volunteering (25+ hours)
- Work as Teacher and Tutor at enrichment academy (teach math, computer programming, lego robotics)
- Founded and ran online professional Graphic Design business (grew, managed, designed static and 3D motion graphics)
- YouTube channel teaching Graphic Design. Partnered with Youtube and Fullscreen Inc.

(EC's are a bit scattered but I just get involved in anything that seems interesting to me)

I'm not sure what I want to major in. I like the idea of being an entrepreneur. I want to do something creative or scientific based. Possibly engineering (Bio, Chem, Mech, etc), CS, nanotech, economics, public policy, philosophy, neuro, etc. Obviously very broad.

So I'm basically wondering if I have any chance at the following schools. Be honest haha I'm looking for any advice I can get.

Ohio State University (Safety School; assured full ride)

UC Berkeley (1st Choice)

University of Pennsylvania (2nd choice)

Cornell University

Columbia University

Northwestern University

Princeton University

Stanford University

UCLA

Dartmouth College

Harvard College

Yale University

University of Michigan

NYU

University of Chicago

USC

Georgetown University

Obviously some are reaches. I'm mostly wondering 1) which are worth applying to, and 2) which I have a chance of getting into.

** Thank you!!! **

As for which are worth applying to, I think you should apply everywhere you might want to go, you’ll never know if you don’t apply. The ivys of course are mostly a toss up but i think you have strong ECs and a good chance at all your schools. Definitely a strong candidate for Berkeley IMO.

2.9 GPA on a 4 scale… 24 ACT…Very good swimmer. Where am I going to apply to???

nxfxsx… you can get into all of those colleges. They create their own unique GPA. Usually not including freshman year. You have really good chances for all of them

Thanks for the advice. I hope you guys are right and I have a good chance at most of them. I feel like it will rely good amount on the essay but we’ll see

I think you have a decent shot at cornell

*Getting into these schools will be all about your essays. Make a very compelling case for why you decided to turn around in high school. If you can pull off a stellar personal statement, you have a shot. Do you face financial troubles? This can help admission officers understand your case a lot better.

For the UCs, they only take a look at your essays if you are a borderline applicant. Using the courses you provided, I calculated your UC GPA and it seems well below the average. Being out of state certainly doesn’t help with this :frowning:
Also, although UCs won’t look at freshman year grades, they will look at how many courses you took. Only 4 courses freshman year and 5 courses sophomore year will hurt a lot.

Good luck! If college apps don’t work out, create that startup and amaze us all!

What is your uwGPA and where is your home state?

Some schools dont even look at your freshman year, so you are good! I’m pretty princeton doesnt really care about freshman

Oh. Now I see you are from Ohio. Still need your uwGPA for chancing. Nevertheless, a lot of schools on your list are reaches disregarding your GPA. For UMich CoE, you are right at the 75% of the last couple years. Considering the low admission rate this year, it is still a low reach even if your GPA is close to 4.0. For LSA, you may have a better chance but still depending on your GPA.

One question: How did you choose these colleges? Other than being a Top 20 list from most of the rating services, what do they have in common? What interests do you have? What part of the country do you want to be in? Rural or urban? This just really feels scattershot.
