My daughter has no idea what she wants to major in. About all I know is that she is not going to major in foreign languages, math, music or drama (though she loves theater tech and wants schools where there is a good drama department--she just doesn't want to major in it), or premed. She is strong in science, math, and the humanities (just doesn't want to major in math). She got 740 on each section of the SATs. I tend to see her in an interdisciplinary major such as environmental studies...she has trouble zeroing in one thing. She has taken extra science courses, AP history courses, excelled at English lit...This summer she took a science college course in bioinformatics... She has a 3.5 unweighted average out of 4...her school has a weird grading system...Excellents in classes are worth 95, so it 's hard to get above a 95 unless you take AP or independent study classes which are worth more. She says she does not want to go to a huge school. So, for instance, I don't think she would like Cornell (I am not crazy about it either). She really liked Swarthmore, for instance. Although she says she doesn't care, I don't see her in a rural environment--she is very much a city kid and takes advantage of what NYC has to offer. She is very independent and does not need to be pushed to study and work hard. She likes to be intellectually challenged.

Does that GPA place her in the top 10% of her class?

Not sure yet.

She might want to go to a Liberal Arts College. They can really help you narrow in on what it is you want to study. What I did was I went to CCs list of top Liberal Arts Colleges. Then I made an account on ■■■■■■■■■■ and plugged all of those schools in, and figure out with ones I had a remote chance at. I wrote all of those colleges down and researched them to figure out which ones I would like to attend. Hope this can help :)

Denison, Kenyon, Oberlin, Macalester, Carleton.

She would rather go to school in a place that she does not have to take a plane to. So, I think Denison et. al. are out. Any others?

Denison, Kenyon and Oberlin are all drivable from NYC (<10 hours in the car which is probably what a flight takes today). Also look at Vassar.

I am thinking down to the south, weather might be better. TCNJ, JHU, Georgetown, William and Mary and Uva. They are all drivable from NYC and a little bit easier to get in than Princeton. I am a big fan of W&M, being there for two summer sessions in the 70’s. :)

Maybe Skidmore and Ct. College.

Barnard and Wellsley might be good.

We saw Haverford, Villanova and U of Penn. My daughter loved Haverford and really liked the other two. I am not sure how I feel about Villanova because it does seem to have a religious presence, though it would certainly be a match, whereas the other two would be reaches.
