Good scores, ok GPA, any chances?

Hi, I attend a competitive public high school in NJ that ranks consistently in the top 100 for public schools across America. I am a multiracial male, Indian-American and African (Kenyan), but around 3/4 Indian-American, so only slightly African.

I am applying to EA to UChicago and MIT and RD to Cornell, UPenn, Swarthmore, Amherst, Claremont-Mckenna, Yale, Williams, Harvard, Brown, Bowdoin, Duke, Princeton, Stanford,
U of MIchigan Columbia, West Point, Wash U in St Louis and Rutgers.

GPA is a 4.22 weighted on a 4.0 scale

SAT I's CR-620, M-800, W-720 ---I am retaking, and also taking the ACT in September

SAT II's--Math II-800, Chemistry-760

AP's taken---US History, World History, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Chemistry, English Language and Composition

AP's for next year---Government and Politics, Spanish, Statistics, BC Calculus, English Literature

So far I have all 4's and 5's and expect all 4's and 5's on the rest

In addition I have taken 9 honors courses. I have always opted for the hardest class that I could possibly take, and have never dropped out of a class.

Learned a lot about how the trading works, and I studied for the series 7 (stockbroker) examination. Paid internship. I got this job because I was selected from a group of 20 underclassmen who took AP econ this year. Every year a student from my high school gets to work for the firm because of excellence in economics and I got lucky.

Rec's
Very good, but not the best ever
Counselor rec will be stellar

My times for track are 51.4 in the 400m, 1:58.0 in the 800m, 4:25 in the 1600m, and 16:14 in a Cross Country 5K. I am going to stay with members of the track teams during my school year at MIT, Swarthmore, Wash U, Amherst, Bowdoin, West Point, Williams, and Yale.--Recruited.

Also, I am trying to cut down the number of schools, so I any advice on which ones to remove would be helpful.

Thanks

If your track times are good enough for you to be supported by coaches…
you’ll have a lot of good options.

With coach’s support, you’re in at H, Y, P or Penn. I don’t know how strong the athletic hook is at the rest, except that it is next to meaningless at MIT.http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/athletic-recruits/846888-schools-where-athletic-recruiting-doesnt-even-count.html</a>
You might want to check out the [Athletic Recruits - College Confidential](Athletic Recruits - College Confidential Forums) subforum for more info on leveraging your athletic advantage.

Good luck.

Editing/adding to the above post:

The URM/ORM thing doesn’t matter if you have coach’s support.

Ivy coaches will tell you you need 7xx on all SAT sections and SAT IIs, so your CR could hinder you. They have a little flexibility on that though, so you might be OK. Good idea to retake and ACT could be the answer. Pull a 700+ CR or a strong ACT composite and you’re golden.

I want to re-emphasize the meaninglessness of the athletic advantage at MIT. A son of a friend was led on by an MIT coach. He was academically qualified and would have been a strong athletic contributor, but was rejected.

One other thing: Track recruiting is all about the times. I’d check out how your times stack up against current runners’ times at your target schools to see where you would be most appreciated, and then focus your efforts with those coaches.

Thanks, amazingly enough I recently visited MIT and had a long meeting with the coaches. The coaches said that MIT has less of a pull than any other school in the country, but they also said that 50% of athletes on the list that the coaches give to the admissions department are accepted. Hopefully this statistic is right, but in reading cc I have become less sure about it.

Unless you can find a way to get recruited, you being an ORM from an OR state with average stats does not bode well for admissions.
