So i will be a Junior in high school this year, im really good at math and have a decent GPA of 3.6 I love to talk, i love math, i love to think and really use my mind. i've decided i wanted to work in the field of banking to be specific i wanted to be an Investment Banker but seeing as the high school i go to isn't well know, even if i graduated top of my class i could never get into an ivy league school and i feel id never be able to get into the field of Investment banking successfully. So honestly im wondering what type of banking careers could i honestly look at, with a good chance to get into to, one with good pay but wont steal me from a social life?

1) you’re too young to think about banking.
2) if you really want to be an I-banker, get good grades and go to a target school for banking (use the search bar if you don’t know the schools)
3) network like crazy.
4) you will work brutal hours if you want good pay. Btw, 60k base + 60k bonus doesn’t get you far in NYC…(assuming you want to be in the country’s financial center).
5) most I-banking analysts work for two or three years and then go on to business school.

Take this with a grain of salt. I used to want to go into banking myself, because I “loved” it too (more like the money. There are better ways to make $$. Btw check out wallstreetoasis.com, it’ll help you.

For now, just focus on getting into a target school. Getting into a good school is just about the only thing you can do now to help you become a banker.

some of the smartest people have gone into investment banking in the last few decades. supposedly it’s a really stimulating activity for highly intelligent minds. that’s what i’ve heard. i have the same impression as you though, that going to an ivy league school really helps a lot if you want to participate in said activity.

i don’t share your pessimism about getting admitted to one however. if you have the brains of an investment banker then that will show up on your app, and you’ll have a decent shot.
