Do you guys know of any good summer programs offered at universities, for high school students? I know of the Oxford Tradition, and a pamphlet for a Cornell summer program came to me a week ago. I like the idea of being able to take college level courses while living on a campus, but I’m wondering if there are some programs better suited for certain people than others. I’m looking to go into the arts at LACs or other smaller universities. However, I’m not going into dance or theatre, or any of the performing arts.

I know a few that are also free. However, I do not know of any theatre-related programs. sorry.. here are the free ones

Brown has an excellent summer program. They run 2 week, 3 week, 5 week and full 7 week summer sessions. The 7 week courses are with regular Brown students and yield a Brown transcript if wanted. I will give one warning. The students are treated as regular college students. They need to be mature enough to handle that environment. They will go for coffee at 2:00 am, etc. My daughter was there the summer before junior year (15) and the summer before senior year (16). She thrived in general and hated to return to high school. There were issues with a promiscuous roommate the first year that took a call to the dean to resolve.

My friend went to Brown this summer and loved it. I've heard that Brown and UPenn's summer programs are not very selective, and although my friend loved Brown, she has not taken the most challenging courses in HS by any means.

I also had a friend go to UPenn and she had a miserable time mostly because of the kids around her. They didn't take their academics seriously enough and it bothered her.

I had another friend go to the Cambridge summer program in England and it changed her and her perspective on life (for the better). So I would look into that as well.

Keep in mind that you need to be willing to pay anywhere from $3000-6000 for these programs, depending on the length and location.

Wolfstarslasher, What's the name of the summer program in Cambridge? Do you know? thanks

Since my other thread sank below visibility, may I please ask here about math summer programs? What do all of you like in summer programs for math-liking young people?

The Excel programs offered by Putney Student Travel are very good. See the Putney Web site for more information--one of my children attended one several years ago for several weeks during the summer after sophomore year of h.s. and had a wonderful experience. Sites include Williams and Amherst.

You can find information about Cambridge here:

I think you might get information if you do well on AP tests or the PSAT or something, because they sent me info on it last year, but I couldn't afford to go.

a quick question. if we get accepted to more than 1 program, do we just call to inform
the others that we want to withdraw from their programs, even if the programs are free?

Yes, I would call/e-mail the other programs to notify them of a withdrawal. Why would it make a difference if the programs were free.

I recommend Brown. Seriously, if you like doing whatever you want, go there.

...and learning. I learned a lot. I took a philosophy class and it was awsome.

Does anyone know about Smith's Summer in Science and Engineering Program? I want to go there this summer.

If you're a rising senior, check out Duke's PreCollege program.
