What do colleges mean when they want "good" teacher recs?

Do the quality of the recommendation and the teacher's writing style matter?

Or do they focus more on what the recommendation says about the student?

And do colleges not like mediocre recs simply praising all the students accomplishments?

Thanks in adv.

a quality teacher rec allows the admissions officers to gain insight that the rest of the application does not offer. that is key. having your teachers simply rehash what you've done in their class or other accomplishments (i.e. highest grades, smartest student, etc) would be a waste. instead, having teachers provide insightful vignettes describing what your personality is like in said teacher's class would ultimately benefit your applications much more.

if you want an example, you could always google it. i remember seeing a few.

I would say it's not about the quality of writing but the content of the rec that matters. To reiterate what sidjenks said, college want recs from teachers who can attest to the applicant's personality and learning style rather than teachers who can eloquently summarize your resume.
