So I have a project that's due on the 28th, a biography on a poet. We need to make a video on our person, filled with sounds, pictures, clips, etc.

I need something basic to edit with, but not overly basic, like Movie Maker. I need to be able to add multiple layers of audio/video. Thing is, I have quite a low end computer (3 year old HP dv2000), and most new software won't run crap on it. I've tried Sony Vegas, Pinnacle Studio, AVS, and Premiere Pro CS5/4/3, everything is laggy as heck, and crashes a lot.

Thanks much for all the help :).

Filmmaking geek here. It seems like you’re on a Windows. From personal experience, I found Sony Vegas the easiest video editing program on the Windows. It’s not “overly-basic” yet it’s not too complicated for a beginner unlike Adobe Premiere Pro which even I found slightly confusing.

I use a Mac, and if you have access to one, check out Final Cut Pro. Mac has their own iMovie as well but I’m not too sure you can have multiple layers of audio/video. I’d say go for Sony Vegas, you can do it pretty easily on there. Yes, everything will be laggy and crash from time to time so save your work (usually it auto-saves). You’d have to deal with that or find a stronger computer.

Good luck!

Well I tried Vegas, hated that piece of crap. Every picture I dropped into the timeline, it would make all blurry and pixelated. And for some reason, when I added text to a picture, the text would become blurry as well. And when I tried to render the video, the output was composed of grainy sound and laggy video. And I YouTube’d and Googled all my problems, nothing worked, so I gave up and clicked uninstall.
