Goodness, I think my essay's too long. Big problem?

So I sat down at my computer and started typing. I just let it all out. And I went to sleep. I woke up the following day and read what I had written the previous night out loud. I thought it was absolutely golden. Then I realized that it was 1,712 words long, at size-11 Calibri font for 2 1/4 pages.

It was verbose, but no words were wasted. If I were to take out any part, the entire essay would fall apart. I love it too much to let it go.

What should I do? Is it so long that it will deter any chances I have? Or if the quality is good, does the excess not matter? I realize the unfathomable amounts of essays the officers have to read, but will they bother to look at mine?

Another thing, my U-Chicago essay on favorite books is 1,400 words long, and it's only 2/3 done. Is that a problem? (this is more of a rhetoric question)

I think 1,712 is over the acceptable limit. I know it seems hard to cut stuff now, but going that much over the limit is only acceptable in VERY rare cases, and I wouldn't test their nerves if I were you. Also, shorter essays are often more effective anyways. If you want, pm me and I can try to help you cut it down (I edited my school newspaper, so I know a thing or two about editing for length :) )

I think going over a little is ok, but 1,712 seems like going too far. If it's impossible to cut it down without losing the essay then I'd suggest you start from scratch, and save the essay you've written. It may come in handy someday.

Will they read your 1700 word essay? Yes, they will. But it will likely not make a good impression. They will immediatly see that not only are you not respecting the guidelines or their time, but you are unable to express yourself under a word constraint. To some, that is a sign of a weak writer.

My draft, at the moment, is at 900 words, and I consider that a serious problem in terms of length.

IMO have a few people (teachers, friends etc.) read it over and see what they say about the length. I think a problem with the longer essays is they get boring and repetitive. It's hard to hold someone's interest through 1700 words.

You got time. Keep working on it and perfect it.

Then, you can edit yourself and get others to edit.

Don't hinder the creative processes at this point-- keep writing!
