I really don't know how to shorten my essay, because the reason it's so long is that it talks about how I hated something something in the 6th grade and how I slowly evolved to love it, so that took a lot of words. And plus I reveal a surprise about myself in the second to last paragraph, so I kind of wanted everything to build up to that.

I want to send it in, but I'm scared I'll be rejected because it's over 500 words...Will college admissions officers actually count the words, or will they be okay with it as long is the essay's interesting?

Yeah, I’ve seen some people accepted with ~650, but 835? That’s just a blatant disregard for the guidelines they have set. Even if it’s a brilliant essay, they will most likely be annoyed

Going over the word limit is okay if it fits onto a single page, single-spaced, without making the font too small. It sounds like yours is a little long. If you’d like, you can PM it to me and I can help tell you what to cut.

If you greatly exceed a word limit, you put yourself at a disadvantage in comparison with others who have the conciseness and self-control, the keenness with words, to write a strong essay AND stay at or near that limit.

If my experience with reading hundreds of college essays is any indication, this essay can be cut, and improved for the cutting.
