I took 4 classes my first semester but one of my classes is my seminar and it was to be taken credit/non. Now I took an Environmental Studies course with lab and got a C+, an Africana Studies course and got a B+ and French 101 and got a B. My overall GPA for the 3 Courses is a 2.84. I am concerned as to whether this is good or bad. I do not want this to affect my future applying to grad school. Help!!!

A) It’s only one semester
B) how many credits is that, 12? It won’t doom your GPA forever. If you take 16 credits next semester and get all As, you’ll raise your GPA to like a 3.5

I go to Wellesley College and the credits work differently. I still got all the credits possible for my courses but I was just wondering how my GPA would affect my future in grad school.

Well, again…it’s only one semester. If you show an upward trend and improve your GPA over the next semesters, then your 2.84 shouldn’t completely eliminate you from grad school.

so my goal to improve my GPA is to get all A’s??
I have writing courses and humanities courses for next semester.

Just to put things in perspective, lets say you got all A’s next semester, your freshman year GPA would be 3.42. It’s very easy to fix a low GPA from the first semester, and everyone knows how hard it is to adjust to college as a first semester freshman. Don’t worry too much, just work hard and you’ll be fine.

Don’t worry about your gpa freshman year, especially first semester. I had difficulties adjusting (I probably still do after break, idk) and I got about the same gpa in engineering. There’s a lot of room for improvement. Don’t worry too much, some things you can’t control.

It’s only one semester, and not even that bad. you have plenty more to fix it before grad school. What do you think was something you could have done better? Too much procrastination? should’ve gone to office hours? studied more?

Don’t worry man I got around a 1.5 last semester and have a borderline 3.0 and I’m a junior.

The biggest thing for me was not visiting enough office hours. I also had some trouble getting my priorities in order for each different class but I have come up with a schedule to get everything done and ready for next semester. I had some difficulty adjusting to the college life away from home.
Thank you so much. All this advice is really helpful. I was worried my first semester GPA would affect me in the long run but this is really great to hear. Thank you everyone!! You have taken a huge weight off my chest!
