Pretty bummed about my 3.14 GPA. (computer science major) How do I improve for next semester? Will this like be a permanent awful stain on my record that employers/grad school will look at and go "oh man this kid must be stupid, can't even get first semester of college right"? The reason why this is so low is because I bombed econ. Also scraped by with a B- in Math 104 which sucks.

you improve by working harder
awful stain… not so much, as long as you improve. i ****ed up my freshman year too. i also got a 4.0 last quarter. it’s all good, just do your best. :)

Your first semester is a time for transition, and it’s understandable if you don’t do as well as you’d like. Employers and grad schools will care much more about your GPA in your major, which you’ve probably barely touched in your first semester. This was only one eighth of your time in college, and you were probably doing mostly general ed requirements, right?

3.14 isn’t very low. If you want something higher, put more work in and focus on your study/work habits. Get a higher GPA in coming semesters, and you’ll see your overall and in-major GPAs rise considerably.

They’re more likely to say, “Heh. I remember first semester. I screwed up too.” Or even “I did way worse than that my first semester.”

Very few people do well their first semester, and a B- in college is not the same thing as a B- in high school. Lots of people get their first Bs in college. It’s really not a big deal.
