Got a Question for a Current Student?

Thanks for your responses. They pretty much echo my feelings, so I'm glad to have them validated. As twinmom said, we have until the end of September to recalibrate, if necessary, which meal plan we choose. I'll stick with the standard and give it a few weeks. If it's not sufficient I'll upgrade then.

I'm interested in auditioning for the orchestra in the fall - I play violin. Do you have any idea what I will have to do to audition and about what time the auditions will take place?

Question: I'm interested in auditioning for the orchestra in the fall - I play violin. Do you have any idea what I will have to do to audition and about what time the auditions will take place?

Answer: I believe auditions take place in early September, right around the beginning of school. If I remember correctly from last year, you'll be getting a mailing from the school about the different musical ensembles and groups you have the opportunity to try out for which will give you more information about the process. The mailing also contains a form which the music department encourages all students interested in trying out for any of the groups to fill out and send back in. You could also try looking at the music department website, which has information about the various musical ensembles on it: Home - Music Department - Vassar College.

Thanks! the website just wasn't doing it for me, but if I'll be getting a mailing that's fabulous :)

Hi
Does anyone know of any transportation available from Vassar to New Haven CT, or further east? An alum from 1979 told me that when she was there (late 70's) there was a bus that ran to New Haven quite often (at least 3 times a week). She said that it was funded by an endowment from another alum.
Thanks

My daughter was a freshman at Vassar this past year and she said that the bus ran from Poughkeepsie into NYC then to New Haven making the trip 4 - 5 hours. Same with the train. She found no direct route from Poughkeepsie to New Haven or Hartford

Thanks
Do you live in the New haven area?

We live in the Hartford Area. On a good day (no traffic), it takes about an hour and 45 mins. to get to campus, traveling 84 W to the Taconic Highway. Its about a 100 miles one way or 3/4 of a tank of gas.

Does Vassar superscore the SAT 1. Thanks

Are you still answering questions?

I wanted to know: Do a majority of students have a car? Are there places to go to that are within walking distance?

My son is a freshman and does not have a car by choice. I think it is mixed. There are places to go to eat within walking distance for sure and the mall is a short ride away--there is a shuttle. The town of Poughkeepsie (not to be confused with the city) is where Vassar is located and there are a few street blocks of stores, restaurants, a bank, a school. The campus is very accessible on foot and includes a beautiful lake, golf course and walking paths. Downtown Poughkeepsie has a civic center and skating rink that is a ten minute drive. The Hudson Valley including New Paltz, Woodstock, Fishkill are full of hiking trails and beautiful vistas and rock climbing but you need a car. Hope that helps.

Do you often find that Vassar´s size is too small and that the amount of opportunities and activities offered is limited?

Question: Do you often find that Vassar´s size is too small and that the amount of opportunities and activities offered is limited?

Answer: Not at all. In my opinion, Vassar is a great choice for someone interested in attending a LAC but concerned about the limitations that could arise out of going to a very small school. This is primarily because it is one of the larger "top" LACs in the nation in that it has ~2,450 students (most LACs have under 2,000 students).

In my first year at the school, I found there was always plenty to do on campus. There are over 100 student clubs, a host of different special activities and themed campus-wide parties, student performances, athletic events, and dances in the Mug (an on-campus sort of club), so there really isn't much lacking from a social/extracurricular standpoint. Also, because Vassar is a small school, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved... numbers are smaller, so it's less competitive to get an executive position in a club, for example, or join a sports team than at a larger university.

Academically, Vassar is also anything but limited. Considering it's small size, it offers a huge amount of majors: students have over fifty different options to choose from, or can create their own major. Because there are so many different majors offered, Vassar also has a large variety in the types of classes offered.

I have a question about housing: is it likely/easy for a freshman to get a two room double?

And what are the bathrooms like?

No two-room doubles for freshmen. Sorry.

Bathrooms depend on the dorm. Joss's bathrooms are brand-new and gorgeous (except in the annexes, where they're creepy, but freshmen don't live in the annexes), Jewett's are fairly new and nice. The rest of them are kind of sketchy, but it's nothing you can't get used to.

Is a correlate sequence basically the same thing as a minor?

Can a current student tell me when they finally heard who their roommate was going to be and where they'd be rooming? The wait for this information is beginning to rival the wait to hear about acceptances! Thanks!

Mid-July. If you're on Facebook, ResLife has a "Vassar Sorting Hat" group this year to answer any questions about rooms, etc. (Wish they would have had that last year... pfft.)

And yes, correlate = minor. (Technically a "major" is a "concentration," but I think that goes by the wayside everywhere except in the official literature.)

yineyes...you may know this by now, but we'll be hearing monday or tuesday! yay. also, there's something on second life to find out your house...check out the facebook sorting hat group if you can.

My child is attending a summer program at Vassar. We are trying to find out what "password" is needed to get into the wireless connection. We were able to see all available networks but she cannot get online on any of them-Student, Guest etc...without a password. PLEASE HELP. Thx.
