Does she have a Vassar email for the summer? If she does, that's her login name and password. If not, contact CIS. What program is she doing? (Just curious! haha)

Hi. No, they don't give them Vassar email accts. They aren't supposed to have access in the dorm but I heard that eventually they figure out how to get online........She is in the SIG program.

The title of this post says it all. The Sorting Hat put my kid in Main Building for next year and now I'm trying to find out everything I can about the place. Do any current students have any info they can share such as the size of the rooms? I've seen two rooms in Jewett so that would be a good measure against which to compare the size of Main's dorm rooms.

How are the bathrooms? Decent, gross or somewhere in between? Is Main a party dorm or does it vary by floor? I've read that there's lots of dorm spirit there which is cool. Does it have any other reputations that you can share? I know those are generalizations, but I'd be happy to hear them anyway. Thanks in advance; it's all getting very, very real now!

L.

A great choice. My D tells me that most Main rooms are usually big, certainly much bigger than most in Jewett. It is highly prized for being centrally located "you can eat without going outside..."....also the closest to classes. "Big".

could you elaborate on jewett as well?

I've actually seen two different rooms in Jewett and, although they did seem pretty small, it's recently been totally renovated and the bathrooms were very clean with new fixtures.

OK, so today more news about the living situation for next year. He's in Main in a TRIPLE!!! To any students out there, are triples good, bad, not so bad, awful or somewhere in the midst of those? Thanks.

Jewett was renovated a few (5?) years ago so is modern inside. I am told and have read that, I have only been in the Quad dorms at Vassar on tours or move in/move out, it lost a bit of the old wood type of charm that the other dorms have. The Tower floors have only a few rooms on them which can make for a very close knit social dynamic. Nice bathrooms in both Joss and Jewett. Personally I think it would be nice to have a view from one of the higher floors but only, at my age, if the elevator is reliable.

Regarding Main. Is your son in a two room triple in Main. I believe, my D is unavailable right now but I am sure some of the current students will respond with more information, that those are two large rooms but am not sure. I found floor plans for the dorms online at one point last summer but don't remember where. Main seemed to have a bit of a maze of rooms which I thought was nice.

He's in a one room triple in Main.

i actually overnighted in one of the largest triples in main. lets just say it was HUGE! but it was prob. cause it was the largest one there. the triples in main, i'd say, cause these are all points of view, are pretty big. i really wanted to get a triple in main, but i got a double in jewett haha.

two questions:
1.) how is placement determined in language class, which is another way of saying: do i have to take the SAT 2 for a language which I studied and plan to continue to study if I don't want to be place in a introductory class?
2.) can you store things on campus over the summer? my guide said itt was easily done, but I never got the specifics.

I have been trolling this site for a long time, but alas I finally have a question to ask...My daughter is going to be a freshman in Noyes this semester, and what concerns me is that Noyes is the one dorm which is open intersessions.
The possibility does exist that someone would be staying in her room during breaks. Do you know what measures Res Life takes to prevent any sort of theft of personal belongings or do the students actually remove their stuff during these times. I actually was quite upset when she was assigned to Noyes, of course, from the sort of bad reputation it seems to have; I think it was actually written in a college guide that said "avoid Noyes like the plague". Thank you for any insight any of you might provide.

I don't get all the negativity surrounding Noyes. The rooms are HUGE and it has an elevator. What more can you ask for?

(Note -- I have spend a grand total of about 20 minutes in Noyes, so take that with a grain of salt, but anyone who lived there will tell you the same thing.)

I don't know about the intersession thing -- I often wondered abou that myself. Have her join the Noyes group on Facebook and ask about it, or just ask about it on the 2012 group.

For the previous question about language placement, I just signed up for French 205 second semester and nobody said anything about it to me. I don't know how it works first semester, though. hmm. (I did have three years of HS French on my transcript, but I didn't take any placement tests, nor did I take AP or SAT II or anything.)

You can't store on campus, but you can get storage near campus. I'm living off-campus next year, so my housemates and I stored our things in our apartment, but before that happened I was planning on using one of the local storage companies. They table in April and you can pick up flyers, etc.

Exactly, dc...I have asked her to pose the question to somebody, but to no avail. I guess she doesn't want to appear as if she is already questioning the 'integrity' of her fellow classmates. But, I mean everyone living in Noyes must be wondering the same thing. So here I am on an anonymous message board trying to get some answers...Let Mom ask the tough questions. LOL

Anyway as of mother of an incoming freshman, just curious why you decided to move off-campus already as a sophomore?

I've actually heard good things about Noyes. I've heard that the rooms are really big and that the common areas are Jetsons-level cool. Plus I know two really nice guys from Baltimore that are going to be living there. Not to worry.

Thanks yin. Yes, she is totally fine with living in Noyes and just grateful that the Sorting Hat didn't put her in Strong. I just thought it would be more in character with the beauty of the Vassar Campus to live in one of the more historic dorms, like Main; but a triple maybe not so much. LOL

yineyes and queryingly,

Noyes is quite historic in its own way as a piece of modern architecture. The bathrooms in the older dorms are quite "historic" to a parent's eyes though my D and the others don't seem to mind.

My understanding from her is that some Noyes occupants have to pack up their stuff, not sure if it is removed or just concentrated in a corner of the room during breaks. She has never heard of any issues regarding that and obviously if one stays one gets to remain in your own room.

Noyes certainly looks nice from the outside though I am more into the older buildings too. Cushing looks interesting.

I am sure both of your children will have a great experience at Vassar.

Dear queryingly,
My son was a freshman in Noyes last year. He had a huge double that was almost like 2 singles divided by 2 large wardrobes. His bathroom was very nice. He was on the 3rd floor, so the elevator was great for moving him in and out. Over the breaks, his room was used by other students but there was absolutely no problem. They give you a lock for the wardrobe and you can put all of your stuff in there for safekeeping. He didn't even bother to do this. He had friends he knew stay there just after Christmas, and a stranger stayed there in the spring. His double overlooked the large horseshoe lawn in front of Noyes so he had a great view of what was going on, including a nude ultimate frisbee practice (typical!). Next year he got a single, rare for a sophomore because of the current closing of Davidson for renovation. If you want more info on the dorm just google Noyes. The architect, Eero Saarinen, designed it. All in all, my son liked the proximity to ACDC, and the comaradarie of the smaller dorm.

Thank you both so much for the great information!

I suspect you have received your bill by now! Welcome to that club.

You might want to check into the Student Health Insurance charge that is on that bill. It is optional, the bill does not make this clear, and your own plan may make it unneeded.

VC Student Accounts/Health Insurance

Explains this further. We didn't notice that last year and paid it.
