Got an F on my midterm which was 25% of my grade.

For my midtetm, I had to write 3 essays in-class about 3 topics. I admit, I only did 2 of the readings. The only critique I got on my F was “Vague” and “Repeating”. Two words. I honestly thought my first essay was OK, but she wrote nothing on it. Just those two words on essay 2 and 3.

I NEED a C- or above in this class for it to count towards my major. I got an A on my 20-point project. So this automatically brings me down to a MAXIMUM of a 75/C. I barely participate because, well, I hate raising my hand and talking to the class. I always have. So I could have already lost my participation grade.
(I only missed 1 class when I was actually sick so I am safe in that way)

I am going into my 5th year of college, (should be graduating now, but I got suspended for a semester and a half) and if I screw this up that may be 6 years. I only have a 2.4 GPA, edging on academic probation.

I don’t know what to do. We have a final and a 10 page essay which, with participation, round out the rest of my grade. Should I just drop now, I only have 5 point wiggle room…

*Midterm.

How much effort do you intend to put in for the rest of the semester? Only you know whether you intend to do the readings or other required work.

With all due respect, your unwillingness to participate and put in the work may be the reason why you’re heading towards a 6th year of college. I would talk to the professor and see what options you have.

Good luck!

This is true. I only have one class this semester that I enjoy (and I am cometelt exelling in!) so it is difficult to force the effort into this. I need this for upper level credits- it isn’t technically for my major, but only C- or more counts towards it.

I am going to take a Summer course probably in hopes that I can get out in 5 years. I got suspended because I had a crazy mental breakdown on campus… not for grades. But I am even behind on credits for a junior because I have dropped multiple classes. I strongly dislike this college but it is too late to switch (also, parents paying)

It doesn’t sound as though you want to drop the course.

I say you ace both the final and the essay.

Honestly, if you didn’t even read the assignment, would a better critique have helped? It probably was “vague and repeating” because you had no idea what you were talking about. And the fact that you need at least a C- really isn’t any concern of your professor. Her job is to give the grade you deserve, not the one you “need.”

Why not give that essay 100%?? A weekend is coming up. Do the reading and whatever other prep you can. Go to office hours, join a study group, whatever it takes.

As to participation: if it’s part of your grade, you have two choices: let it pull down your grade and possibly force a 5th year, or participate. Only you can decide which is the lesser of those evils.

I say you either ace the rest of the class, talk to your professor or and TA, or find out when your last day to drop the class is and drop if you want and if an advisor says its OK to do so. I’m in the exact same boat as you right now and these are my intentions, provided I failed my history midtem that’s also worth 25% of my grade.
