So… I applied to Princeton SCEA this fall and ended up being deferred. It’s difficult to tell what this says about me as a student as the majority of students applying get deferred. So, I didn’t take it as bad news necessarily, but it definitely wasn’t good news. I’m posting on this thread because I’m starting to have doubts as to my chances of getting into any of my others schools. I was sure prior to applying that I’d get into at least one school (not necessarily early), but a deferral has been humbling and made me reconsider my chances.
So, here is the list of schools I’m applying to: UC Berkeley, UCLA, Williams, Bowdoin, Claremont McKenna, Pomona College, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Brown, and Stanford. Before I post grades, extracurriculars, etc., I wanted to clarify that I’m not looking to hear that I don’t have enough safety schools, just what people think my chances are.
With that, here are the specifics:
GPA/ Rank: 4.0 unweighted, 4.5 weighted (this is at the end of my Junior year), 1/620ish students
ACT: 35 cumulative-- 36 reading, 36 writing, 35 math, 32 science
This was my first time taking the ACT, and I had never taken a practice test, so I didn’t anticipate the I would end up running out of time on the science section. Hopefully the low science score is clarified with AP exams and Subject Tests
SAT II:
Math-- 800
Biology, E-- 760
AP Exams:
Calculus AB-- 5
Calculus BC-- 5
Stats-- 5
Chem-- 5
Physics 1-- 4
Bio-- 5
Environmental Science-- 5
Language and Composition-- 5
Awards:
World Scholar’s Cup Central Asian Round Best Scholar
Harvard MUN China Outstanding Delegate
Harvard Book Prize
National Merit Semifinalist
National AP Scholar
Extracurriculars:
Captain of Varsity Swim Team
Captain of Parliamentary Debate Team
Member of Varsity Volleyball Team
Private Tutor in mostly Calculus and Physics
Volunteer Tutoring that I joined as a 13 y.o. when all of the others were college students
Swim Instructor/ Lifeguard
Misc:
I am bilingual and have spent extensive time abroad, specifically in Central Asia (all of 10th grade was spent there).
Ethnically am Asian and white, but the Asian I am (Kazakh) is not one many have heard of.
After finishing al math classes at my HS, I now take calculus classes at one of the schools I am applying to.
If you managed to read through all of that, thank you. So, objectively speaking, what are my chances? It’s okay not to sugarcoat/ be nice about it. I’d prefer an objective assessment over a “nice” one. Thank you to whomever responds! <3
