I finally got accepted today. I did not get into the school of engineering, though. If I go to UMD (over Michigan State or Ohio State), it will be with the full intent of getting an engineering degree. If I do well my freshman year, what are the odds that I will be able to transfer into the school of engineering my sophomore year?

Some stats for anyone who was wondering:

GPA as of second semester - 3.0 unweighted with a huge upward trend.
SAT - math: 710 CR: 600 writing: 610
6 AP's, one IB
Considered white (though actually Middle Eastern)

You only transfer in after sophomore year.

Were you accepted for engineering at MSU or OSU?

Those are good universities. I don’t know all of your circumstances, but I think I’d be inclined to take a sure offer from either OSU or MSU over a maybe from UMCP.

Yeah, I agree with the above poster.

It is VERY hard to transfer into Engineering at Maryland, since it is a Limited Enrollment Program, and you will have to take all the required courses for an Engineering major with the chance of not getting in later.

If you got in at one of the other schools, they are just as good as Maryland. Go there.

If you were to transfer, your freshman year you could take some of the courses that Engineers take through letters and sciences. In order to transfer, I believe you have to have somewhere around a 3.0/3.5 average (don’t quite remember) in order to get in. But you would have to make up for the missed classes that you would not be allowed to take as a letters and science student, such as Intro to Engineering. It is do-able, maybe if you have AP credits to get rid of the electives or if you take a few classes over the summer to make sure you graduate in the 4 years. Obviously it’s going to be a big challenge but if you like the school that much, then go for it!

I didn’t know it would be that hard to transfer in after freshman year. I don’t know why I wasn’t admitted, I received 5’s on AP Physics and BC Calc.

You are guarenteed to get into the engineering school if you have the following:
-3.0 GPA
-Calc 1+2 completed with at least a B
-Physics 161
-Chem131 (need to double check)

Just make sure you have a 3.0 and you don’t get a C in any gateway and you are 100 percent guaranteed admission. It isn’t particularly difficult getting in because the school weeds out those who aren’t ready within the Engineering degree. Clark School of Engineering is top notch, so good luck.
