So I got admitted to USC and am being considered for one of their scholarships. The only problem is, I had a terrible first semester and my grades are absolutely awful. They are as follows:

IB Chem SL - A-
TOK - B+
IB Physics SL - B+
IB Bio HL - A-
IB English HL - A-
IB Calc 2 - B-

Grades technically aren't finalized but I expect my GPA to drop from a 3.84 to a 3.79. What's the chance that they will rescind my acceptance? I'm especially worried about that B- in calc 2 because I had A's last year in Calc 1 and I got into the bioengineering program.

depends on what your grades were before your senior year. if the patterns are simliar, than no. however, since you have a pretty dramatic GPA drop, you might. i would consult with a professional counselor. the most important thing is to remember about the conditional accpetance thing. work hard second semester and it should validify your acceptance.

Well I had 3 A’s, 1 A-, and 2 B+'s first semester of junior year, and 1 A, 3 A-'s, and 2 B+'s second semester. Is that significantly different? I feel like the GPA drop means it is.

what the. How can you have the A-F scale on IB subjects? We only have it for TOK and Extended Essay? Haha, you must do it really differently in the U.S.

Try to stay above Cs (and even a C or 2) & you should be OK. Main thing is to keep learning your material–it will help you at USC so you’re not constantly having to learn everything & review frantically in college because you have a good grasp & recall of the material.

Randomibdude - In the US we have a school grade which determines our GPA and an IB grade which is mostly just for getting college credit. The system is different here because IB generally isn’t valued as much as AP and not everyone takes IB.

And thanks for the feedback guys! I’m going to strive for mostly A’s next semester, but I feel less nervous about my grades now. :P

if you have been accepted, you don’t need to send mid year grades if they didn’t ask for them right? i know that you do have to send your senior grades if you matriculate…

In addition, I don’t think any college will rescind for a B+. They realize that it’s senior year, things happen, and you might not be motivated. Besides, a B+ is still a good grade and takes some effort to get.
