My son received his acceptance today! He now moves into the decision-making phase. Of course, this will be his decision, but any input is welcome.

He is probably going to major in business or economics.

Congrats! Is he going to the accepted students program on April 6th? My son is; for him it will be the second look. Have you visited all of the schools?

Yes, we have visited all three -- however, we visited both Goucher and McDaniel about a year ago. As of last night, I discovered that my son is leaning towards Goucher. This surprised me a bit, because our visits definitely went better at both of the other two schools. However, this was because our guide at Goucher was a young lady who had different interests than my son's (she did a very good job, though), and because he was left with the impression that it was a "dance school" (after we walked by a dance class).

Now, with increasing maturity and collecting information from other sources, I think that he sees that Goucher could be a good fit for him. We will definitely be at Accepted Students day. He has grown up in an urban/suburban environment, and has always had friends of different races and ethnic groups and I think that Goucher could be a good fit for him in that regard, being somewhat more diverse than many LACs. However, both Susquehanna and McDaniel are wonderful schools, and I'm sure he/we will be visiting at least one of them again. It is interesting to watch the though processes of a high school senior making this huge decision, and to see the things that influence them!

From a current Goucher student:
GO TO ACCEPTED APPLICANTS DAY!
This is such a great opportunity to learn about Goucher before you make that final decision. They have a lot of great things planned, and the best way to know if a school is right for the student is to physically be on campus and talk to students, professors, and anyone else from the school. Even if you've already been on a tour or sat in on an information session, this day is geared towards helping students figure out how they feel about Goucher, and it is much more involved than a regular visit.
And as a side note, make sure you do your research for all of your schools, their websites are a GREAT resource and you can always call Admissions with any questions. I didn't enjoy my tour and info session as much as I would have liked for personal reasons for Goucher in particular, but I practically memorized the website and in the process, I realized that it was definitely a good fit for me. So be thorough, college isn't something you want to mess around with!!!
Congratulations to everyone that was accepted!

Hi magicsmom - my daughter was also admitted to McDaniel as well. Very nice people, like another college she got into - St. Micheal's - McDaniel too put a very nice note on her admission letter regarding her essay, they really liked it and quoted a line from it. I thought it was very nice. The swim coach there has been terrific as well. for us its Goucher, St. Michael's, Ithaca, McDaniel, and Lesley oh my. SHe likes them all the other four came close in $$ with FA its down to Goucher and basically where she feels more comfortable. She has visited them all and had sleepovers at three, so we wait....Def. going to Accepted student day if the $is good. Congrats -

Magicsmom, I have a son who is a junior and we are looking at the very same schools you are posting about. We plan to visit American, McDaniel and Susquehanna during Spring I Break. My son has LD (although he performs quite well in his very academic high school).
I would love to ask you some questions about your process, your son's qualifications, etc. Can I send you a PM? Thanks,

vamomof3 -- Yes! Certainly.

My son has also been accepted to Goucher. We visited last summer and consider it to be ideally situated. Only concern is reading about how the College doesn't seem to provide enough activities to promote more social interaction (like at Skidmore, Ithaca, American, St. Lawrence--also accepted).

My d is completing her 1st year at Goucher. She typically reports attending a campus-sponsored event on any given weekend. What kind of activities is he looking for?

As he is rather adrift when it comes to fields of interest (but very anxious and open to discover his "path"), events on campus of all varieties, cultural, social, academic and just plain school-spirited fun would provide him a greater chance to grow and expand his interests, maybe even become inspired. He enjoys being an active part of a greater whole as opposed to being g.p.a./career driven to the point of being reclusive and one-dimensional. He lives in a European city, goes to an international school and is anxious to experience life in the U.S. (of which he is a citizen and in which he has never lived).

My daughter has found peers to be bright, outspoken, accepting, and unpretentious. Most of her friends are also hard workers who take school seriously. Activities are very easy to join, and students take some pride in having such quirky activities as a Pirates Club and a campus-wide interactive Humans vs. Zombies game. It's also a very environmentally- conscious campus. The major events on campus are well attended by students, faculty, and the surrounding community. Most that I've sampled have a global/international flavor. The President is well connected in the International Journalistic community.

jasmom, If I might ask, has your D said anything about the drug and drinking scene? My S does not indulge. I have heard that it is there, but there is no pressure if you don't. Is that true? Goucher is my S's top choice. I guess I am concerned that with such a small student body that he feel comfortable.

Only anecdotal, so no way of knowing how it (drinking/drugging) compares to other colleges.

I just read about Goucher in a well-known college guide which addressed my question regarding activities/social interaction. It actually sounds better than the other schools I mentioned, rather ideal actually. Wish I could get more verifications so we can come to a decision!

grcoco, are you going to Accepted Applicant Day? If you can't make it, you might try looking up other threads and the visit listings about Goucher on CC.

We considered the trip to see the other schools as well, but it is just too daunting an undertaking at this time (we're a few thousand miles away....) I've read the visit listings, as well--anything I can get my hands on, actually, for all the schools; they are all simply wonderful. It amazes me that people in the U.S. aren't more appreciative of what's available for their children. It's just plain incomparable.

I will post a visit report after we get back. Hope it will help.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Hi everybody! I’m currently a sophomore at Goucher and firstly: I love it here!
As for the drug/drinking scene: NO PRESSURE. It does happen, of course, as with any school. However, no one will judge you or anything if you choose not to indulge. There is no Greek life here, so the parties are always small and contained and rarely interfere with anyone else as far as noise or disturbances in the hall, etc. I find it’s the perfect medium: you can find a party if you’re interested, and you can find numerous other things to do if you’re not!
This semester the students decided to have an activity EVERY weekend, and they’ve definitely been successful so there never won’t be anything to do. I have never been at a loss for something to do, and the activities are always very different, unique, and exciting. There is also a collegetown shuttle that goes to Hopkins, Loyola, Notre Dame, Towson U, the Inner Harbor, Penn Station, MICA, Villa Julie, (I think that’s all of them…) so you can ALWAYS find something to do elsewhere as well!
Hope this helps!!! Let me know if you guys have more questions about Goucher!
And good luck on everyone’s decision!

I have the sense that all 3 schools you began mentioning in the thread–Goucher, McDaniel and Susquehanna–are underrated and underpublicized. Goucher is certainly closer to Baltimore than Susquehanna is to any city. Goucher, if I recall correctly, requires a junior year out of the country, while Susquehanna merely requires an off campus intercultural experience–which can be overseas, but could also be teaching in an inner city–and need not be an entire year. I also get the impression–perhaps mistakenly, that Goucher is the most artsy and diverse of the 3 and Susquehanna has the most business courses, intramural sports and career counseling.

So far we have only visited Susquehanna–which was lovely and seemed to have a lot going for it. I think Goucher’s lack of Greek life is a plus; others may strongly disagree.

Please keep us posted of your thought process on each school and best of luck choosing among these fine options.
