I am wondering what your reactions were. Did It help you choose? My S asked me if we really had to visit the rest of the schools. The things I liked in no particular order:

The support built in for freshman. One of their first semester teachers becomes their adviser. The teacher to student ratio is 1 to 9. The professors seem to really like to teach. My son had interviewed in Dec. The people that he interviewed with remembered him by name and came up to him. They have started a new Department of Student Engagement to give students more to do on campus and a new hangout/ restaurant that will be open till 2 am. He sat in on two classes, an Intro to Music class and an English Lit class. Both of which he really enjoyed.

The things I am still not sure about I guess relate to the size. Is it too small? Its funny because that is also what my S likes about it.

My son is currently attending Goucher and is really enjoying himself there. He has made many friends, and does not seem to have any problems not having enough to do on the weekends.

LongeyeMom -
In response to your question about the drinking/drug use at Goucher, my son doesn’t partake in either as well, and I don’t think he feels any pressure at all to do so. He has made many friends who don’t do either. I’m sure you can find people there who do drink/use drugs and others who don’t. Also, in terms of Goucher being too small of a school, I think its size is an advantage because of the relationships the students develop with their professors (which might not happen at a larger school). I hope your son chooses Goucher!

Thank you jackiemom! Did you son choose to live in Sondheim, the substance free house? Although it was not part of the tour, we got in when a resident saw us standing outside. WE asked her if we could see her room and talk to her. They have the biggest accomodations on campus. My son is not sure what to do about choosing a dorm. Any suggestions would be helpful. What is your son’s major?

As a freshman (he’s a sophomore now) my son had asked to live in Heubeck, because he had stayed there on his overnight and liked it. But students don’t automatically get their first choice, and he ended up in Stimson. At first I was worried because Stimson was known as the most “social” dorm, but he was very happy there. He was in a triple and both of his roommates and the friends he made on the floor (it was a very friendly floor which was great) weren’t into partying. I guess you choose your friends that are like you. He didn’t feel it was necessary to be in a substance free dorm, although his friend is living in Sondheim now and has a really nice room. My son was very undecided as to a major but just declared psychology as his major. I would be happy to answer any other questions you have.

I think that particular year there was some overcrowding in the dorms and there were some triples, but I heard there were non last year. His room was a corner room and big enough for the three of them and they all decided to stay together. He didn’t seem to mind. This year he is in a double in Froelicher but for next year he lucked out and is going to be an apt in the T. They are huge, with four single rooms, a living area, kitchen area and bath.

I think Stimson has the largest rooms, but it isn’t air conditioned. I hear Heubeck has slightly smaller rooms but it is newer and has air conditioning. It’s also supposed to be less friendly. Also, I don’t think Heubeck has a lot of freshmen, but Stimson is almost all freshmen.

You should call the school to find out for sure; I think you might need a medical reason. Perhaps somebody else knows the answer? Still would like an answer to my first questions; has anyone else decided on Goucher?

My son was very involved in sports in high school, and wanted to be sure there were enough intramural sports when he got to Goucher. At Goucher he has been on intramural teams in soccer and ultimate frisbee last year, and this year he has done soccer and basketball. The seasons aren’t as long as he would like, but he really enjoys them. I don’t really know anything about the business courses at Goucher. As for the work/fun balance, my son says he doesn’t have too much work that it keeps him from having fun, but he knows people who spend a lot of time in the library even on the weekends. He said the workload depends on the courses you take and how much time you put into them. In general, I think Goucher has a really good balance compared to other schools where people seem really stressed. At the same time, the courses can be challenging and rigorous.
