Goucher College

I just received a athletic recruitment letter in the mail from Goucher College. Anyone have any comments on it?

My daughter and her friend from high school just started this year as freshmen, and were recruited for the women's volleyball team. All teams are Division III, so there are no athletic scholarships. However, they do have very good merit and need-based scholarships at Goucher, which both girls are receiving. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Do they like it, hows the campus and the dorms....?? thanks

So far, they both seem to like the whole Goucher College experience. They said that most of the other students are very nice and laid back. They also like their classes (my daughter was a little intimidated by the large Intro to Psych class - possibly around 100 students, but most likely closer to 60 in an auditorium), but her other classes are no larger than 15 students. No complaints about the food (they are on the food plans), and their dorm room is a fairly nice size for a double. There were quite a few dorm rooms made into triples this year due to the higher number of students that enrolled. The campus is about 287 acres, and the area seems secluded with lots of trees around the campus. There appears to be a good security system on campus. It's only about a 15 minute walk to the town area (Towson Town Mall, restaurants, movies), and about a 20 minute drive to downtown Baltimore. There is also a shuttle bus that stops at Goucher, and continues to the mall area, Towson U., Johns Hopkins and downtown Baltimore inner harbor area.

My son is an Asian-American who is interested in studying the humanities at a LAC. We live outside Washington, D.C. I know your d has only been there a short time but can you comment on diversity and minority experiences at Goucher. The reputation for Goucher is that it is mostly white upper middle class kids. Any information in that regard would be very helpful.

As are most small-medium LAC's, Goucher's student population is approx. 80% White, with about 4.5% Black, 4.5% Asian, <4% Hispanic, and others who have not declared their ethnicity. There appears to be students from varying income levels, but mostly middle class. There does not seem to be a preponderance of any one type of student (i.e., preppie, athlete, those into theater, dance and the arts, etc.), but a good overall mixture of students where one can find their own group. The students seem to be very friendly and mostly from liberal political backgrounds. If being at a college with a high Asian student population is very important, this might not be the right school for your son, though.

Thank you for the information. Will likely visit the campus with son during the fall.

My D who is at George mason would probably have chosen Goucher if we'd gotten any financial aid. She was at the lower end of their SAT range and thus didn't receive much financial aid. She liked her visit. A little more "artsey" than some of the other LAC such as Randolph-Macon or Hobart (two schools we became familiar with)
