Governor's Honors Program vs. Other Summer Programs

The Governor's Honors Program applications are due soon for my state and I was debating whether to apply or not. Would the Governor's Honor's Program give good research experience for someone interested in biology? Also, will making this program be useful for college admission, or will it not affect admissions at all?

For our state, the Governor's school program during the summer is great! It is pretty competitive and looks good on the college application especially when applying to our in-state schools as they are well aware of the program.

Assuming you're from GA - GHP is solid and most kids have a good time, but there are lots of summer programs all over the country that will offer you ample research opportunities with actual professors. Some are free, some even pay you. I'm not positive, but I think GHP courses in general are more along the lines of enrichment and I don't know if you'd be doing actual research. My friend turned down GHP twice for two separate selective summer research programs. Everyone has a blast at GHP socially, but the consensus is that Valdosta is a horrible boring place. I'm sure it's better than doing nothing, and GHP has a good reputation at least in this state, but so many qualified kids don't do GHP or choose not to that I doubt it'll be seen as majorly significant for non-GA colleges.

If your honors program is part of the governor's school system, then you will get great research experience and it is considered quite prestigious. I know several students who attended my state's governor's school for the sciences. They took university level college courses (including lab) and had to conduct a major research project. The head of the program (a professor at a prestigious university) gave them individualized college recs. Additionally, I've heard some schools (Cal Tech, I believe, is one) specifically look for governor's school "grads" because they are aware of the rigor of the program (as well as the selectivity to be admitted).

Again, I'm not sure whether your program is part of the governor's school consortium, but it's worth checking out.

Thanks for all of the quick replies!

sartorialiste, may I ask which research programs your friend went to in the place of GHP?

And yes, I am from GA, and am hoping to go to school outside of the state. If anyone has information about the program in Valdosta, that would be helpful as well! Thanks.

bump......
