I'd like to know a little bit more about this program. I already know the basics from my counselors and some research, but if anyone has attended or knows someone who has attended, thoughts would be great. Also, how big of a difference does it make on a transcript?

I have had two daughters attend. One attended in summer 2008 for dance. The other attended summer 2011 for communicative arts. I personally think it is a phenominal program that is very important on college appications. The first daughter was a finalist for every major scholarship at every college she applied to (Jefferson at UVA, Morehead at UNC, Johnson at Washington and Lee, Foundations Fellows at UGA). We feel that governor’s honors had a lot to do with that. The second daughter is applying now.

That being said, my oldest daughter attended a public high school and my next daughter attends a private school (applying to colleges now). My public school daughter jumped at the chance to attend and it was life changing. She made life long friends. My private school daughter relunctantly applied and looked down her nose at it as if it were uncool and not worthy of a private school student. While it was not life changing for her, she loved it and made life long friends also. She also dropped her “private school is better attitude”.

I have always heard that colleges value all summer programs that students engage in as wonderful because it beats sitting at home and watching TV. But the more competitive the program (which tends to translate as cheaper), the more value it has in college admission eyes. The Foundation Fellows UGA administration told us that they recruit heavily from the Governor’s Honors participants. The only students we know who were accepted to UNC from our small Georgia town attended Governor’s honors. Hope this helps.

I am a current junior who attended this past summer as a math major, communicative arts minor. While I cannot vouch for how much of an impact it has on a transcript, I will say that it was the best experience of my life. Every single attendee was an interesting person, and I could not recommend this program more highly. The friendships I made there look to be lifelong, and I cannot imagine my life without having attended. I would absolutely suggest you give everything you have in the interviews to be able to attend. While it sounds ‘fishy’, the program truly is life-changing. Out of our 694 attendees, (as far as I know) only 1 came out disappointed in the program.
