GPA Acceptance?

Hello Friends,

Im in 10th Grade or a software and i have not been doing to good in school. My overall GPA unweighted is 2.5 and weighted is 2.625 GPA. That being said i am a very smart person and dedication is key to my success. I was wondering if i where to get a 4.0 for my remainder 2 year as a 11th grader and 12th grader and take some AP courses will that allow me to get into UCSD or UCI or some school in California? I know i can do it this semester is almost over and my GPA weighted is 4.2. What is the lowest GPA to get accepted into a UC school? Thanks! Any information will help!

Possible but no plausabile. I will explain:

  1. Only 10-11th grades are used in UC GPA, so you only have 1 year. http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
  2. Average UC GPA for both schools are 4.0+ and majority of applicants have consistently high grades
  3. An upward trend will definitely help to boost your chances but you need a minimum UC GPA of 3.0 to even apply that will barely get you into UCM/UCR.
  4. Senior grades are used to keep your provisional admit and will not be seen by admissions until after you enroll and graduate HS
  5. UC admissions are not only grades, but test scores, EC’s and essays. If you have a good reason for your low grades, you can address this in one of your essays. Take a look at some of the rejected/waitlisted stats from these schools this year. There is no guarantee even with a 4.0 and SAT of 2000+.

There are other ways to achieve your goal:

  1. Go to a CC for 2 years and use the TAG program for UCI, UCSD does not participate .http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/guarantee/

CC is probably the best route, since your given priority and you can start all over again. You need 60 semester or 90 units to transfer with Junior standing, so you are looking at 2 years but you can get into a good UC this way.

Thank you so much for that great information! So if I’m understanding you correctly I wouldn’t need to take a CC or in the same equivalence of another 2 years of high school to make up those grades that I did not do well in. And how do colleges look at this?

You would graduate from HS and attend a CC for about 2 years and take the required classes specific to your UC TAG. Your HS grades and test scores will not matter, only how well you do at the CC. If you check assist.org it will show which classes at the CC will transfer to the UC and check the TAG requirements.

There are just 9 UCs and they are all selective. It will be difficult to gain admission into any of them from where you sit. The lowest threshold is UCM (still a good school, just sets the lowest threshold) That link will give you a feel of what it takes to get in there. (all UCs publish a similar table - google search UCX Freshman Profile)

Note - the folks with low GPA or SAT offset that with out-performance on the other. So a 3.4 and a 2000 probably got in - as did a 3.7 and 1800.

I’d encourage you to broaden your perspective a bit and consider CSUs and privates.

And also would summer courses at a collage be beneficial and will those transfer into grades for my high school wich can bring my GPA up if I where to get all A’s in those classes? Thanks!
