GPA an issue. Chance me for Georgia Tech.

I have been having a rough couple of weeks as I feel the sand is slipping through my fingers.
My general stats are fairly decent, but I slipped up and hurt my GPA fairly severely.
I am very interested in Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, but have preference for GT.
I go to a decent California high school that offers a pretty good selection of courses. I have
a 2300 SAT, am on a 4 man team for the World Quest competition where we made it to the nationals
and placed 4th. I'm in IB and have taken the max number of AP classes that i could.
I am president of a club where we support a 501c3 nonprofit organization called
Project Angkor that sends a large team of doctors to Cambodia. I am also in OCAD.
I am really afraid because my slip up was first semester junior year, which i know
is crucial. As for AP tests, i basically expect all 4's and 5's. I don't mean to sound
like the pitiful hopeful, but I heard that GT will make exceptions for poor stats occasionally.
I blew it 1st sem freshman year, got better, than blew it again 1st sem junior year.
Though the trend does not reflect it, please assume that I'll grow up and pull straight
A's 2nd semester junior year. With stats this low already, I cant really afford to
assume any lower... I apologize for the depressing tone, though Im sure you understand
the typical high school "freak-out". I have posted all grades, even nonacademic because
I thought as much info as possible would be helpful. My class rank used to be fine, but is
now worrisome. I hope 2nd semester can pull me back up to top 10%.

Will continue rigor into senior year, and will take IB Physics.

I am highly interested in Physics and engineering. I feel like my last
hopes are Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech due to my foolishness and
I pray I may be given a 2nd chance in life through their acceptance.

Thank you so much for helping me in my time of fear and panic.
I hope I may someday return the favor.

the best way to figure out whether you would get accepted EA or possibly be deferred is to take your grades that you have. Only use the ones that tech counts. Add the points that GT does for AP/IB classes. By figuring your gpa the tech way you will see if your what your gpa is to them. Once you know that you will be able to compared it to the EA and RD gpa’s.

I see. I will look at that right away, and post the new one.
Thank you for responding.

Hmm, some of my courses say Hon/IB. The GT website says they
only count
AP/IB as extra weight, so i am unsure how to classify that.

Well, discounting that, i have a 3.68 gpa on their scale.

If they are IB classes they get the .5 if they are honors or gifted classes they don’t however they do look at rigor. Is that 3.68 assuming you get all A’s spring semester or just what you have taken now?

last years admitted class tech version of the gpa was a■Mid-50% GPA: 3.77 - 4.08

^ that’s what last years was. You have a really good SAT. I would apply EA but if the EA’s gpa’s are what they were like this year you probably will get deferred. However if you can get A’s this semester and continue it next fall I think you have a good chance to get in. Just make sure you work to keep your grades up.

I got into GT with a high GPa but low SAT scores (1700-1800). However, I wrote really good essays and that might have helped :P

That’s a good point. OP if you look at the accepted students vs deferred students some of the deferred students look like they should have been accepted in EA. The only thing we can’t see is their essays. So make sure a write good essay’s that clearly state you want to attend GT.:)

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I am now worried that my drop will show really poorly as a negative trend/pattern. Will this kill my chances? I also am interested in virginia tech, but I’m not too familiar with it. I would really appreciate a chance and comparison to georgia tech. Thanks

OP- Don’t worry about the past. Just work on your classes you are taking now. Sorry I don’t know anything about Virginia Tech.

Thank you guys for all your input. I’m not trying to turn this into Oprah, but I seriously
was struggling with everything that has been happening and was kinda depressed.
Just the thought of having a plan and a route forward again really has helped and
encouraged me to stay strong. The future looks much brighter.

I think you should be fine. Maybe not Early action but I would say you get in eventually. Just have a good essay.
