So I’m a sophomore at a super competitive high school, and I’m struggling with my grades. I got 3 A-, 1 B, and 3 As last year. This year, I’m not doing so hot. I’m probably going to end the year with 3 B+s and 4 As, if I finish out 4th quarter with good grades and finals.
If I do fairly decent (B+, A-, A) throughout my junior year of high school and receive above average test scores (1300-1600 for SAT and 32-36 on ACT), will there still be hope for me to get into a good/elite college (ex: UVA in state, duke, georgetown, tulane, etc)?
Extra Curricular Info:
-Avid ballerina (14 hrs/week)
-South Asian Student Association Member
-Key Club Member
-Political Campaign Internship this summer
-Volunteering (over 50 hrs throughout high school so far and daily hospital volunteering this summer)
Please let me know if you need any more information. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Getting A-'s, A’s and B’s is hardly “struggling with” grades.
@lostaccount It is if a bunch of my classmates are unbelievably smart and can pull off all As, or if I want to get into elite universities.
@sona7662 “elite universities” Looks like someone has themselves wrapped around the pinky finger of prestige!
Look. In my HS career, I’ve had a mix of A’s and B’s, as did one of my friends. As a matter of fact, we took the same amount of classes, and she only had one more “A” than I did (she took more electives, academic GPA wise we were basically the same). My SAT was better than her SAT, but her ACT was better than mine. But both of the scores were not perfect. A lot of our peers have straight A’s, but we weren’t fazed, even if our GPA’s were not above 3.8. She’s going to Cornell, and I’m going to a top ranked liberal arts college. What’s your excuse?
@thisisfine2020 that reassures me a bit… did you have any unique extra curriculars? or are you a urm? idk anyhting that made ur applications stand out?
@sona7662 We’re both Asian, not first gen, very high income, STEM majors (which is very common for girls in our area), no legacy at those schools, and go to a high achieving high school. I’m first gen American, and she’s I think fifth? (idk her grandma went to UCLA). I don’t want to go into too much detail, but she was a very good musician (did symphonies outside of school, nothing too major though) and I have my name recognized across an entire academic department at my school because of my achievement in the competitions relating to the subject (which I am majoring in).
