GPA concern-- Please leave your HONEST opinion

Hey, I had a quick question about my GPA and wanted you guys to basically determine whether I’m screwed or not. I took 5 CC classes when I was in high school and am thinking about transferring to UC from a local CC. The only part that’s concerning me right now is my 3.176 GPA. Am I screwed? I have 26.5 units and I got a C in one of the major classes which was 6 quarter units :l. I’m really panicking and don’t really know what to do. Could I easily get my GPA up or is it most likely going to stay at a 3.5ish even if I try really hard? My major is most likely going to be Economics. I know I can maintain a 3.2 GPA and transfer to UCSB with TAG(hopefully), but do you guys think I can still get a 3.7-3.8ish or no?

If you received a D or F in any of the courses you took? If so, you can retake those and replace the old grade for the new with Academic Renewal. That would boost it a lot.

If retaking isn’t an option, then I suggest using a GPA calculator (found online). You can do “what if” scenarios to see what your GPA will look like if you take X number of classes and get Y grades. Some will even let you enter your current grades, then you can tell it what your Goal GPA is, and it will let you know what you have to do (mathematically) to make that happen.

What is the makeup of your GPA? As @2016Candles said, if you have D’s or F’s, you can retake those classes. Depending on what they are, you might be able to find easy online versions of them.

If it’s just a lot of C’s, it could be tough. It depends on how many classes you’re willing to take to try and boost your grade. You can take a lot of easy classes with easy teachers online (that you’ve carefully selected) and can work to boost your grade. Of course, you’ll have to do great in all of your regular classes as well.

if you are at a CC now then you should go talk to a xfer counselor to see if they know (or can find out) if ucla gives any latitude on grades for college courses taken in HS. The UCs regularly send counselors to all CCs so you could ask on their next visit. Or you could call ucla admissions during their advising hours listed on their website and ask.

It’s alright. As long as you show upward trend and show that you are trying hard :slight_smile:

Someone got into UCLA with 3.0 GPA! Check her video!

If you keep getting A’s in other IGETC courses and your major requirements, you’ll be fine.

Plus, if you are planning to do TAG with other UCs, you are on the right track!

@2016Candles @briank82 have 2 A’s, 2 B’s, 1 C :l. The C is the grade that’s really messing me up haha.

That’s nothing, man. Get a lot more A’s and B’s (hopefully A’s), and that C won’t mean too much.

@briank82 Yeah, alot of people are saying that too. If I do keep getting A’s and end up with a 3.7-3.8ish, do you think I’m USC, UC San Diego, or UCLA bound?

OP, I highly recommend you look further into the econ program at UCSB. I’m assuming it’s less difficult to get into than UCLA and it’s very prestigious. I’m a current student at UCSB and I know for a fact that we have a strong economics program that’s far less competitive– something that might be beneficial for you in the future if you’re considering grad/business school. I think you’ll be fine as long as you keep your grades up. Good luck!

@InamoratiAnon Oh yeah, definitely. I’m going to TAG to UCSB for sure, but I really want to go to San Diego or USC for either accounting or economics.

A 3.7-3.8 is good enough for any UC, or USC. A GPA like that will put you in the conversation, but then it’s on you to woo the admissions officers through your personal statements and extracurriculars.
