Are there any GPA Cutoffs for admissions to USAFA. I am curious, if a 3.5 GPA coming in from another college is good for academy standards.

I think a 3.5 from a college (out of a 4) is pretty good. I dont know if there is a cutoff but again, i dont think your score you should worry too much about. If you are already in college then the fact that you are reapplying from college is good enough anyways.

You might want to check with admissions and see if there is one or not.

Very little about the academy is objective when it comes to admissions requirements. For instance, they've rejected people with 4.0s while they've also let people in who have lower GPAs but excel in other areas.

UN, Now that I am into the Academy, and my semester at school is copming to a close, I was thinking about maybe letting my grades fall into the B+ range... Is this a bad idea? Have you ever heard of an Appointment being yanked for poor grades (and if so what were they?), thanks again for all the info.

Why would you let your grades slip?

I think it was agreed earlier in another post that grade modifiers (B+, C- etc) do not effect the grade. So to have your grades "Fall" into the B+ range would be the same as getting a B-.

Again, the only reason appointments would be pulled for GRADES, is, according to my counselor and the catelog, are for getting a D or F.

I was even told that if you are indanger of failing a class to withdrawl yourself from it. It might be easier to explain a withdrawl than a failing grade (As long as after you withdrawl you still haev 12+ credits). But i think that may be up to you.

"why would you let your grades slip?"-- dbluecap

well, I have been working extremely hard for the past four years of high school, and now that I am going into such a time commitment (in 5 months 14 days 10 hours 9 min. and 36 seconds!) I was thinking about doing some family things like visiting my brother in college etc... This might interfere with school a bit and therefore my grades might slip from A's to some B's-- and i wouldn't be too upset considering what I've done. It's just free time and senior high school work don't usually go to well together, especially with my schedule-- but in reality second semester senior year is supposed to be easy so I'm sure it won't be an issue. Plus, everytime I try and dial back-- I never can!

The only reason it would matter would be if you were striving for the highest class rank or looking for scholarships based on rank or gpa.

I haven't heard of this happening, but that isn't to say it never has. Check with someone in the admissions office. I wouldn't really recommend it, but it's your choice. Just be sure that you don't do something to jeopardize what you've worked so hard to earn!

A B+ instead of an A in the last half of the year is not going to jeapordize your appointment at all. Maybe if it was going to be like an F, I would start to worry, but you're fine.

I have a question that doesn't really have to do with grades, but is kinda related. Is there a minimum amount of credits that you have to take for like the second semester in order to still be considered as a satisfactory transcript? Right now I'm taking 17 credits (5 classes), all of which are a ton of work and very difficult. I was thinking that maybe I could drop one of them, lighten my workload a bit, and drop down to 13 credits for this semester. Is this too few?

PatriotCPM - If you are still in High School, you should check with your counselor. Our school district has specific requirements as to the mimimum number of credit hours per semester. A senior is required to complete a minimum of 21 credits in order to graduate. Our State Department of Education has designated that two types of diplomas will be awarded to graduates. We have a standard diploma (must complete the minimum graduation requirements) and an honors diploma (must meet 8 of the 9 requirements AND complete a college prep curriculum). The honors diploma requires * 4 credits English, 3 credits of Math including Alg I, Alg II & Geom, *3 credits of Science, *3 credits of coll prep or higher Scocial Studies, * either 3 credits of 1 Foreign Languages or 2 credits of 2 Foriegn Languages, 1 credit of Fine Arts, maintain a cumulative gpa of 3.5 (4 pt scale), * obtain a 27 on the ACT or a 1220 on the SAT, *1 credit of Business/
Tech AND earn 2 additional credits in the first 6 requirements listed above.
I would think long and hard before dropping a class. If you choose to, be ready to explain your reasons.
Best wishes to you. You control your future. Mack the best of it! :)

Hey patriot, youre in college right?

I think you need 12 semester hours (or what ever your school maintains as "full time"). I think if you go part time, the academy wouldnt like that. Now what you DO with those remaining 12 credits im not sure. Im sure Intro to TV watching, beginers Ballet, whole number arithmatic etc :-P

I'm taking the minimum classes (although these are ap calc, ap bio, ap physics, ap literature, and band) in high school. It's nice to not really care about the GPA anymore...I'm enjoying actually learning without being overly concerned about tests etc.

Make the most of these last couple months.

PatriotCPM, it should be okay just to take the average number of credits at your school, which is different for individual schools. If 13 is, then you should be fine, but if you're taking 17 credit hours, why don't you consider dropping a 3hr course? 14 definitely doesn't look bad at all...

I'm taking Calculus 2, Physics 2, Fundamentals of Flight (an Aeronautical Engineering class), Psychology, and Engineering Processes (Another Engineering Class). If I'm going to drop a class, It's probably going to be Fundamentals of Flight, taking me down to 13 credits. The minimum number of credits you can take here is 12, so I'll be above that. Plus, I'll still be taking a pretty decent courseload. Anyways, I'm definitely going to call my admissions counselor to see her point of view.

I'm taking 17 but it's because there is a major conflict between major here at my school and what USNA wants me to take. I'm taking Chem, Calc, Int'l Relations, French and Economics. I get scholarship from the department so I have to at least pretend I'm following the curriculum.
