GPA FOR DUKE ADMISSIONS! Please HELP!!

Hey all,

I am a junior in Georgia and I will be applying to Duke next year. I had a question regarding GPA . At my school, every Honors or AP course semester grade receives 7 bonus points for the rigor. When my school submits my transcript, they only inlude the weighted grades (including the 7points). I was wondering whether Duke would strip these 7 points when calculating my unweighted GPA. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Your question is not clear.

All unweighted GPAs are calculated using a baseline, without the additional points. You are required to provide an unweighted GPA in the commonapp. Duke may or may not care to recalculate your GPA.

Duke has told me that they don’t even really look at GPA, simply because it varies so much from school to school. Some schools use 4 point scales, some 100, etc., so there’s just no way to really compare students from different schools using a GPA. Instead, they focus on your class rank and class rigor because it compares you to the other students at your school. Also, some schools don’t even have the opportunity to take Honors/AP classes so the weighted GPA becomes irrelevant.

Thanks ncbug. Do you know what they’re looking for in class rank? Top 10%? I’m just shy of that at like 10.2% percent. My class of students and school itself are very competitive, hence my rank isn’t as high as some of the others applying to Duke. Would this have a large negative impact on my chances? I’m taking all advanced courses junior year and senior year (5aps each) and I’ve taken all honors classes otherwise.

Since you’re taking pretty hard classes I don’t think it should be too much of a problem, but typically yes they are looking for top 10%. I’m actually in the same situation you are… I took all honors and AP classes but my class rank is 10.2%. I’m waiting for a decision right now so I’ll have to let you know if I got in or not! Probably not, but I’m still hoping.
