Can someone provide me with the avg GPA for these Biology Majors: IB, MCB, Public Health, Microbial Bio, Molecular Toxicology, MEB, and Nutri Sci? Is there a website where I can find these stats? I am currently a freshman and I am mostly interested in IB, MoTox, and Nutri Sci. I like them all equally and it would be easier to choose the right major if I have a general idea of the avg GPA and level of difficulty for the upper divs for these three majors. Right now, I am in L&S and thinking of IB. If I transfer to CNR, I would most likely choose motox or nutri sci. What is the difference between a BA from L&S and BS from CNR in regards to job prospects after college if I do not want to attend med school or grad school? Much advice needed. Thanks!

sigh.

You probably won’t “like them all equally” after actually taking some bio/chem classes or like intro to nutri sci/molecular toxicology classes. You’re still a freshman, you don’t have to (and most likely can’t) declare a major yet. It’s not like switching into CNR is ever a problem for anyone. There’s just really no point in asking about gpa’s right now.

Average departmental GPAs from CampusBuddy

IB is 3.34
BioE is 3.51
EPS is 3.50
ESPM is 3.45
ES is 3.39
PMB is 3.28
Public Health is 3.62
NST is 3.37
MCB is 2.96

These are the departmental averages. Many of the CNR majors require courses from several different departments, so their department averages doesn’t correlate with major as much. IB and MCB require mostly courses from their respective department (IB allows up to two courses from OoD, different MCB tracks have 0-2 slots for OoD courses), so for them the department average and major average are much more correlated.

Wow, it’s interesting that the BioE GPA average is so high.

Edit: I do realize that this is the departmental GPA and not the GPA for people with that major.

BioE supposedly have a lenient upper division grading curve.

This is an old thread, but I think it needs to be corrected (as I have on other threads with similar incorrect information). This grade information is just not correct.

As a Cal professor I have access from the administration to average cumulative grade data for all majors as well as average major grades for some. Between 2010 and 2013, the average MAJOR GPAs at Berkeley for MCB majors was 3.25, and for IB majors it was 3.11.

In terms of CUMULATIVE GPAs, here are some averages for the 2010-2013 period for the indicated majors:
IB: 3.28
ESPM: 3.39
PMB: 3.19
Public Health: 3.43
NST: 3.34
MCB: 3.42

So please do not make any decisions based on faulty data!
