gpa jump, hows it gonna affect me?

alright, so in midway of sophomore year i decided to try even harder in school (lots of factors got me down, but i dont wanna use excuses...) but heres my gpa so far..
(unweighted gpa)
freshman: 2.7
sophomore: 3.4
junior: 3.9

i have what i think is a pretty good set of extracirriculars, but im only worried that my gpa will scare off admission officers from not even reading my essay... what do you think? will they take in the fact that i improved? will my average gpa keep my essay from being read? thanks in advance people :)

I think your GPA shows improvement. Colleges like to see progress as long as you're taking AP and honors classes, if they are offered.

The UCs will ignore your freshman GPA, which will be to your benefit.

However, the Ivy Leagues' reaction to your freshman year's grades, are unpredictable.

I think colleges love seeing a student who matures and improves. If you choose, you can address the issue in your personal essay. As mentioned above, lots of schools don't incorporate the freshman grades. I believe U Michigan is another that uses soph grades on. And remember that there are a lot of outstanding schools out of the Ivy League.
