GPA Question

Hey everyone,
I have a question regarding GPA and my chances into HYPS and MIT. The scenario is this: I've always been in the top 5% of my class, and after this year I would have completed 8 AP courses (considered very rigorous at my school). I have extensive ECs, many awards, and several hundred hours devoted to volunteer service. I've taken more than 5 SAT IIs (scores all over 750) and have gotten 2250+ on my SAT I.

Sadly, I got a C in AP Chemistry first semester this year. I've A's in all my other subjects, including other sciences. I'm wondering how this C is going to effect my admission into the HYPS and MIT. This situation has come as a blow to me because I wanted to take chem as a challenge and because my performance in other science classes was great, but unhappily I did not surpass this challenge. I guess chem is just not my subject.

I'll appreciate it if I can hear you guys' opinions on this.

I think the C will sting, especially late in your high school career. However, if you want to know if it eliminates you completely the answer is no. I recall people on this board that were accepted with 1-2 C's.

"(considered very rigorous at my school)"

Hahaha, I found this funny because it sounds as you're trying to say your school has harder AP Classes than other schools.

And your C can be made up for if you get a 5 on the AP test. If you get a 5, it proves that you know the **** well and you should have gotten A/A.

The GPA blow will only be about 0.04 difference (4.36 will become a 4.32).

i dont think its going to hurt you as much as you think. although a lot of applicants to these schools will have straight a's (in ap classes, etc), you dont have a greatly decreased chance just because of that one c

im in the same boat dude.

taking 6 APs, 5 As and a C+...fun times huh?
haha.

Thanks for you opinions.

Anyone else? BUMP

BUMP...

Probably hardly at all...But you do realize that your stats - as good as they are - are a bit above average for a HYPSM applicant, and consequently you probably have about a 10 to 15% chance of getting into any one of these schools.

Stating the obvious, AP test results from this spring will have no bearing on application decisions. You will already have decided where you are matriculating to.

Anyways, I don't think it will make that much of a difference since all your other classes are strong.
