GPA Question

I asked my counselor what my unweighted GPA and she said 4.2. I’m sort of confused since I thought unweighted GPA was supposed to be less than 4. (I am taking 2 AP’s and the rest of my classes are all honors if that might have something to do with it). Does that seem right, and if so, is that a pretty good GPA for a sophomore looking at colleges such as Stanford, Berkeley, UVA, etc? Thank you so much in advance!

Every HS calculates GPA differently so ask this question to your guidance counselor. (My only thought is that an unweighted GPA may be over 4.0 if a school gives out A+ grades.)

Add up 4 for every A, 3 for every B, etc., then divide by the number of grades to get a basic version of unweighted HS GPA.

If you do pluses and minuses, add/subtract .33 to the above. Typically, A+ is still 4.0 when most colleges recalculate unweighted GPA’s.

It’s hard to comment on/judge the GPS as it doesn’t seem to be accurate/consistent with how college will look at it.

^^^^ FWIW our local HS counts an A+ as a 4.4 unweighted (the HS does not weight GPA). So I would suggest that the guidance counselor is be the best source to answer the OPs specific question.

Ok, thank you so much guys! I just got into looking at colleges and etc and I just feel so overwhelmed since there’s so much I need to learn.

Also, specific colleges may have their own HS GPA recalculations. OP mentioned Berkeley; all UCs do a recalculation like that described here:
