Im currently a Junior and am a bit worried about my GPA. For some reason, my grade is filled with many students that get grades which are somewhat unreal. If compared to past years, my grades are excellent and would probably be top 10 in the class, but Im not sure that is the case when Im compared to my grade. My school has a 100 point scale and my weighted GPA is above 100. My unweighted is currently about 96.4. Im wondering how colleges would view my grades, and what they would be on a 4.0 scale. Also, my school doesn’t rank students but do colleges quantitatively do so?
Colleges get a school profile from your high school listing a lot of things: Average GPA, offered APs, average ACT, ect…
That will give them a little background on your school. They can also look at past students that went to their school who came from your high school.
Most schools will unweight your grades and use that GPA. If your school does not rank, then it doesn’t really matter that much as long as your grades are high and test scores back up your grades.
For example I took a math class last year that my grade takes this year. I got a 93 last year but the average was about 87 or so. This year, it seems that the class is much easier because of common core. Would colleges compare me to my grade or the class I actually took.
Probably both. Colleges care about the rigor of your courseload and then of course what grades you got in those classes. After determining the difficulty of the class, they’d also look at what grades your classmates got in that same class.
Colleges will compare you to the other students who apply during the same admissions period that you apply. Your GC will provide a school profile that will put your grades in context for the colleges. Your academic record sounds very strong. Be proud of that record and stop worrying.
My school has the same scale, only they don’t weight anything. A 96 is an A average, so I don’t know why you would be worried. It’s great!
